Here's hoping. It's the entire party that needs removing from power though.

A miner's strike style peasants' revolt is what is needed. They wouldn't have the ***** to stand against them like Thatcher did.

Question

And exactly who in opposition is capable of doing a better job?

I'm not overly happy with out current government but would rather see Labour in power than the Tories.

paulr: A democracy is when you have a right to disagree with someone elses view, but Blair doesn't run the country or his party that way. He is as big a dictator as Sadam, except he hasn't any serious oil reserves!!

Put the country back on track though didnt she.

Blair inherited a good economy 6 years ago and has done nothing with it. All he has done is go back to the old Labour ways of tax and spend. He's not done a thing for the UK since coming to power.

Still, wont be long before he's out.

Dear Mr Blair - explain this you **** :-

Highest taxes ever (petrol, NI, Council Tax etc)
NHS=****
Roads=****
Hospitals=****
Policing=****
Police pay=****
Public transport=****
oh but we have a low mortage rate now set by bank of england not government
Military =**** (wot no flack jacket or bang-bang sticks i.e. guns)
High crime rates
Escalating illegal immigration levels
Oh lets give money to the EU to build roads in Spain why not !
Oh lets give money to the EU to pay for French lessons for the French - cos they say English is taking over the planet (old news matey - Capt Cook sorted that out in the 1700's)

Bring back Maggie is all I'll say

You lot make me laugh - do you even remember Maggie. At least under this governemnt there's a chance most of you will have a job to be able to pay the 'highest tax ever'.

Also I love the way you say the interest rate is set by the Bank of England, but conveniently forget that the council tax rate is set by the councils.

You also fail to mention the over inflated profit you will all make when you sell your houses.

The there's a steadily growing stable economy and continued low inflation.

Sure some things are far from perect, but it's not all bad.

And that profit is so much use to me as I am going to go an live on the street now! Come on get real, the new, bigger house you want to move to will have gone up by even more so you are hardly seeing a profit.

Oh yeah, I suppose you could die and it will go to the kids, but they won't be able to carry on living in the familly home coz they will have to sell it to pay all the inheritance tax.

Indeed it is - but as central government has slashed funding over the last few years local coucnils have had to put council tax up. I dont recall central taxation being slahed at the same time though.

Another ploy by Blair and Brown to put taxes up, blame someone else and hope the plebs believe its not their fault.

Clearly its working.

Deano

p.s. No-one has ever satisfactorily explained why the "poll tax" was so bad. Individuals pay for local services. What the **** has the size of my house got to do with how much i should pay to the local council ?. Small house, 2 parents and a couple of 25 year old kids living at home = 4 adults using local services. My Wife and I = 2 adults yet we pay far more. Ooooh that seems fair. Not.

Deano,

By inference you are calling me a pleb, but that's OK as you've obviously met me, know who I am and what I'm like so you are well placed to make that judgement.

Two points on your post.

If the slashing of central funding has been so bad how come not all councils have had to hike their council tax rates through the roof. I'll tell you why - those that haven't increase their rates dramatically and who charge a lower rate than others are run properly whereas others are not. If one council can survive on the central funding from the government then they all can - fact!!

The poll tax - you ask the same tired old question as to why it did not work as you gaze at it through rose tinted spectacles from a utopian viewpoint. The original premise of the poll tax was that everyone should pay the same amount. Good idea and I have no problems with that. Unfortunately as with most of Maggie's policies her government was unable to implement it without making a complete mess of it of course.

The first thing that happened was she let council's set their own rate. So someone in one area would pay £300 whereas someone in another council area would pay £150 - suddenly everyone is not paying the same!!! Why did this happen, because she didn't have the bottle to tell the councils they had to run their boroughs on a certain budget (unlike another government who is at least prepared to reduce their central funding).

The second mistake and final nail in the coffin was she decided to allow the councils to collect their own taxes. This was plain stupid as it should have been collected centrally and divided up equally by the average population over the annum of the boroughs (taking into account any weighting amounts for borough related differences e.g. large areas, small population). As it was the councils collecting their own tax had to track every individual moving in and out of their boroughs and issue separate bills for each duration spent in the borough.

So for example if you lived in Manchester for 3 months then Birmingham for three months, then Newcastle for three months and then back to Manchester for three months you were duty bound to notify each council of your address change and they were duty bound to issue you a poll tax bill for each term so theoretically you'd have had 4 bills. Of course a lot of people didn't notify the councils and dropped of the electoral role so they couldn't be traced and the logistical nightmare for the councils meant many issued court summons instead of bills or just went after those they knew they could find (Hello Warrington!!!!)

It is clear to anyone (except a Tory politician) that this was not a recipe for success and hence the growing unrest of not only some of the people, but the councils as well fuelled it's demise and caused us to return to a system not dissimilar to the original rates system.

There you are - poll tax in a nutshell - or "How to take another great idea and f**k it up completely" - Maggie could write a book on that subject.

I see nothing wrong in local councils setting differing rates fro their areas whether the tax is per person or per house. The fact its a local tax means the prioriites of councils varies. Some have passed on the funding shortfalls direct to people with bigger bills. Others have cut spending so the increase in bills is smaller. I fully expect the rural coincil I'm under to have different priorities to an inner city council - thats the point of having local councils after all.

I never suggested it was implemented properly - merely rebutting the suggestion it was inherently "unfair".

And "Pleb" - I apologise if (in its literal sense) you are not a commoner but are part of the nobility or in its more modern sense you are not part of the governing/political elite of this country.

Otherwise you, I and I'm guessing 99.9% of S'net are Plebs - that is "of the common people".

No you asked why the poll tax was "so bad". I explained that it wasn't - it was just f**ked up by the Tories and then explained how.

Further to this you say that differing councils having differing rates is fair. Under that premise if I complain that in Area A it costs me more for my poll tax than Area B you would tell me to go and live in Area B.

Therefore if you are bleating about paying more because you live in a bigger house might I suggest you go and live in a smaller one.

Ultimately that's how a democracy functions - in an idealistic sense those better off contribute more to support those that are worse off.

SJ,

Yes I do remember 'before' Maggie, but then I'm not wishing those times back again whereas the rose tinted spectacles crowd on here seem to be wishing Maggie would return. It is not my memory that needs questioning!!!
