There never was one thing in particular that I wanted to be, which is probably why I have followed a random professional path through engineering/scientific/marketing/business analysis and despite this still ended up in IT with everyone else!

left skoool in '85 with 5 o'levels
did 4 year apprenticeship at fords (dagenham) studying toolmaking, stayed on at college (day release) for another 2 years and then got sick of shift work, so went to sell fitted bedrooms for a while, got fed up of travelling around, so blagged a job in selling photocopiers, got fedup with this and blagged another job in a computer training centre, delivering training courses for NVQ's in IT.
got fed up with this (no money, local job) and went to london to seek my riches.
after a few desktop support jobs, network manager jobs etc, set up on my own in August.
I now work about 2 days a week and drink beer for a living

thats about it.

no doubt i'll be living on the street in the next installment.

Never really wanted to do anything in particular just seemed to drift towards electrical type stuff. Went to college when I left school when I was 16 (1995) to do electrical installation, started an apprenticeship as an electrician a year later when I had completed my first year at college. At the age of 22 (2001) I jacked in sparkying started work with Midlands Electricity and retrained as a H.V (High Voltage) mains cable jointer which takes 4 years training, I’m now in my last year of my traineeship and enjoying it a load more than the sparkying and earning a lot more as well.

I wanted to be RICH. I had no idea what I wanted to do during my last two years at school. I remember the interview with the careers advisor, he was not too impressed with my answers.

Q.What do you want to do when you leave school?

A.Dunno....

Q.You must have some ideas.

A.Whatever!

So I left school at 16, messed about for six months, then my Nan of all people got me a job in a friends motorbike shop (The Huyton Honda Centre). I did a YTS type effort in there, supposedly servicing and repairing motorbikes. My main job was to look after the caravans parked on the land behind the shop. I had to ride around them once in the morning, and once in the evening on the shops Honda BENLEY 200 . The vans where stored there whilst they werent being used. I was also in charge of the buttie run. I never touched a spanner in the 8 months I was there.

Then I got a job in a factory assembling central heating boilers (Myson Combustion Products LTD) Kirkby. I worked my way up to machine programmer/setter/operator on a specialized CNC punch press. Stayed there 10 years. Then they closed, I was made redundant. They moved production to Burnley.

So I got a job in a place called 'Stoves' who made cookers and showers, I hated it so I sacked it after 4 months.

I then went to colleage for 8 months, I did a course in engineering design using Autocad version 10/12 and a design application called 'Metalsoft'. When I passed the C&Guilds exams a company called 'The Rainford Group' took me on as a 'Junior' design engineer. I worked on projects including VMS(Variable motorway signage), advertising units for More O'Ferrall, bus shelters, and RFI Shielded cabinets fot the mobile phone industry. I was there for 3 years, then it went t1ts up, redundant again!

Luckily the next week Myson got in touch and said they would like me to work for them on the punching centre I used to work on. Due to the fact that it hadnt run properly since its move from Kirkby. Result I thought, they make me redundant pay me a shed full of money, then ask me back. So I worked in Burnley for 3 years, travelling each day from Liverpool, 110 miles round trip each day. What a ball ache! easy job but a **** of a drive. The company changed from Myson, to Potterton, to Baxi, and basically what they were doing was asking me to train people up on this machine to cover three shifts, then they where going to off load me.

So I applied to work at the new Jaguar plant at Halewood, they had just finished production of the Escort, and they were introducing the 'X' Type. I passed the interviews, sat the tests, went through the medical and got the job. I have been there 3 years up until the present day. Currently team leader in the underbody section looking after robots, amongs other menial tasks, mind numbingly boring, but its a job.

Ive done other 'ahem' jobs during this period, things I can tell you about including security work, window tinting, messin about with cars an Taxi's in a friends garage etc...all unpaid of course.

And Im still not RICH.......

Sorry for boring you to tears, but it was write this or watch IACGMOOH, easy choice.

Later Yoza.

Maybe i'm stupid but I always wanted to work in IT although didn't "apply" myself at school...

Left at sixteen and got a job as a tape monkey.... Basically staring at a computer screen waiting for it to ask for a reel tape... I'm sure some people know what they are on here..

Worked my way up from computer operator to Unix app support consultant for one of the biggest companies in the world... Which apparently you can't get into without a degree..!!!

Don't get me started on that one!

Well done! A degree doesn't mean anything these days it seems.

Me, wanted to an Architect, but got progressively more and more sick of education, so studied Computer Science at college, then got a software trainee position at a company who put me through HNC/HND part time and made me work the other days in the trade. Got my qualifications, then buggered off to work the vendor of the kit we used.

I always wanted to be a car mechanic in school, but then conmputing was added as a subject at school and so ended up in IT. I must admit that playing with computers pays better than playing with cars.

I wanted to be a coach driver.. I loved the idea of driving, and loved the idea of taking a whole load of people to Alton Towers and getting a free day there !

Somehow, being a spoddy geek wasn't high on my list

Like Yoza, I wanted to be rich.

So I went to uni, got a degree in electronic engineering & worked for BBC R&D and a central London finance company in the holidays to pay for it.

Then I started to work in the defence industry

I've given up on rich, happiness and living in the country is easier (and more rewarding)

Went to school in sweden and to the college equivalent (or maybe it's highschool) studying science.
Got a summer job as an Act! database administrator which was supposed to last for three weeks, but I managed to blag myself a programming job as well, writing an application for the company to keep track of their re-sellers, and this lasted me another 6-7 weeks up until I started studying for a MEng in Computer Technology.
Hated every minute of uni though, so dropped out of uni after only six months and had another fluke and got a programming job. Worked for the same company for 3.5 years and transferred to London during the same period.
Unfortunately got made redundant in May 2002, so had to find another job. Had no luck finding programming jobs in London, but luckily part of my job was being a Unix admin (and I was a unix geek from the age of 15 anyway), so got a job as a systems admin for a company, responsible for support and upkeep of the network in Europe.

Now bored stiff due to low work load, so doing an Open Uni degree while at work Please, if anyone has a position going for a unix/network/windows admin or C/Perl programmer with a decent salary, please email me and I'll send you my CV

Wnated to be a pilot in the RAF, but was too speccy, so was offered Engineer Officer instead. Turned it down after the RAF paid me through Uni, went into engineering though for a few years afterwards.
Now an IT monkey, with company sponsoring MBA, so hopefully will have that in a years time and then either:
1) swan off for the big bucks
2) get my **** in gear and start my own business.

Any other budding entrepreneurs?

Chuck

Always wanted to be a marine biologist though
Funny that - my cuz wanted to be the same, so he went off to Japan to study. His mum made him learn Japanese. When he came back to London, he needed a job & someone heard he spoke Japanese, so suggested he apply for a job @ Flemings in the Japanese markets. Been in Japanese bonds ever since. I think he's over the road @ MSDW now.

Me?

Er - I didn't know, prehaps thought Forestry would be nice. 5 Os & 1 A (just)

Tried a couple of things, then thought that maybe a SSC with the Gurkas was a good idea, so did a PO course and RCB. They said go off & see the world, then come back, but I was skint. Couple of brief jobs later & I ended up in London with £150 & staying @ my sisters. Bought a mini-van and started driving as a sameday courier. That was in 1986. Worked for a variety of companies as a car or motorbike courier, then started getting operations work as a controller. Got into computers in the early 90s and when I left the London market 18 months ago, I was Tech/Ops Director for one of the larger companies. Tech/Ops mgr for a national sameday company, last year until they went bust, currently looking for work.

Thing I'm proud of is that I started with bugger all & worked hard to get what I have now, maybe not the richest, but better than many and reasonably comfortable. Having a child has changed my focus though to be more family orientated & surviving on less (money & stress).

always fncied the idea of getting into motorsport engineering, but will have to see how that works ??

at 22 i am in my 4th year at uni, where i have studied computer aided product design, and engineering.. and still working part time for a mobile phone retailer that i first started with when i started uni 4yrs ago in london..

have to say, that june cant come soon enough for me as i am completely sick of uni and serving the general public of this country..

if i dont fluke my way into a job that i would like to do by the end of summer, then its bye bye england and off.. see some of the world, and try to spend some time going across america and australia.. but will have to see what the future brings i suppose ?

Sad barsteward dreamer that I was, I wanted to be a fighter pilot. Nothing like setting your sights low...

At 16 however, the school I was attending decided to let me leave early, and asked that I not come back. Although I was ecstatic about getting away from the place, it meant I would never get a regular commission in any armed service - a requirement for pilots in the RAF & RN (I didn't know NCO's could fly in the AAC at the time). There were lots of out of work commercial pilots at the time so I didn't pursue this route either.

Now being without any direction or clue about what I wanted to do, I drifted into an electronics technician apprenticeship. After a couple of years, I switched to software and never looked back. Ended up with an HND in Software Engineering.

Now a senior software engineer jack of all trades type.

Another vote for the Marine Biologist, then I realised that I was now way near clever enough
Ended up going to college for a year doing electronics, then got an apprenticeship with a multi-national oil co, industrial sparky, then swapped over to instrumentation, amd finally got a job offshore. Pretty happy now, 2weeks on 2 weeks off and good cash

John.
