7.9 !! not good ....my old man was 13.something tho !!
Go to your GP especially if there is a history of it in your family.
I am now on medication to bring it down.

it is really not too important unless it is really high and you have another threat ie. high blood pressure or you are overweight.

The average UK man 35-64 is 6.1.

Is going to the GP the only way, does it cost even if there is no reason/symptoms?

Done as standard, coz I'm diabetic

they tend to subject you to all sorts of tests

Mine is 6 mmol/l Total cholesterol this does not bode well with the high BP. But at the end of the day, a few dietary and lifestyle changes should sort it out. Lots of good books on the market

Not so smiley edit

The problem is all the best foods are bad for your cholestorol level.
ie meat,cheese etc.

Thumbs up

Had mine done just after losing 4 stone the Atkins Diet, everyone I talked to seemed to be telling me that this diet will send my cholesterol through the roof so I thought I was wise to have it checked. It turned out to be 4.2 which as I’m lead to believe by my GP is quite low.

Be aware that if you have your cholesterol checked via your GP and subsequently apply for life/critical insurance you will probably have to declare it. This means if the level is on the high side you could have your premium loaded.

If you pay for a test at a chemist nobody is to know.

i bet no nutritionalist told u this - it was the usual arm-chair expert.

a ketogenic diet is not likely to increase cholesterol as you're not using the food in the same way that someone on a non-keto diet consuming that amount of "high cholesterol" food would.

in fact, research has suggested that ketogenic diets REDUCE cholesterol.

when in keto, i regularly eat > 3lbs of non-lean red meat, 12 eggs, 1-2lbs of cheese etc per day. my cholesterol level is low.

Where can you find the basics of this Atkins diet, without reading the whole book?

Sounds interesting.

6.9 around six months ago. 6.4 a few months before that. At this rate I`ll be able to supply my own lard to fry sausages in.

Mine is 6 at the moment and that is too high for me. If it is higher in 6 months from my last test then medication for me i have been told. Im 23 , diabetic (17 years) and i also have high blood pressure aswell which they were very concerned about , which again , if its high .. then more medication.

... the joys of health , or lack of it ... im not overweight either .. just need more excercise

It just so happens that our "nurse" was doing tests in our work today, mine is 5.41 = borderline. Also my :
blood pressure was 120/70 = below 145/95 is desirable
body mass index was 29 = Male - 20-25 acceptable, 26-30 overweight, 31-40 serouisly overweight. Female - 19-24 acceptable, 25-29 overweight, 30-40 seriously overweight.
Cholesterol was 5.41 = below 5.18 desirable, 5.18-6.2 borderline, above 6.2 high.
Glusose was 7.8 (had a coffee with one sugar about an hour before)= usually about 3-5 is good and 10 is too high.

PS My weight is just under 13 stone and about 171cm tall.

Windyboy Is anybody going to the chippy at lunchtime ? get me a double fish supper !!!

Said I'd let you know! 6.1 But that is all cholesterol, Nurse said to get a true reading I'd have to get a full test done at my own docs. Fire service doc said "5 years ago the rec/level was 6. And it's getting revised down every year!" In that case there must come a point when everyone will have to high a level?
