I've got a couple of Bamboo plants stuck in glass containers with only water (when I remember to fill them). Does that count??

The growing of plants, especially vegetables, in water containing essential mineral nutrients rather than in soil.

hydroponics are quite a mission to sort out properly although results are favourable. Can be costly and if using sodium hallide bulbs heavy on electricity and your house glows like the sun under infra-red.

However, try to obtain good quality strip lights (flouescents?). 4X 4 foot long tubes in a suitable holder/cowling (easily sourced pre-wired) with the ability to raise or lower when required (perhaps by small chains and some well placed nails in the roof rafters). Suitable results for little outlay.

as above, hydroponics is fairly complicated to get into. if you just want a few plants, better to just get a couple of grow lamps, some potting compost and some plant food. less chance of getting busted as well. turning your loft into a hydroponics unit can attract a bit of attention. although i did once see and entire flat in a towerblock in glasgow, that had been working away as a skunk factory without seeming to arouse any interest.
