Whay r the Pro n Cons of this system???? Im thinking of buying as the recorder is fecked!!!

Is it worth having?
What happens to yr existing digibox (I am already sky customer)?
Price, I've heard it's £199 but also heard it is cheaper?
Are there any alternatives to sky +?
Will it work with normal sky, Ie if I ever decide to get rid of the sky, will it work on normal tv/freeview?

Any info gratful

Cheers Adam

I'd say yes, definately.

What happens to yr existing digibox?
Flogged mine on E Bay

I've heard it's £199 but also heard it is cheaper
Paid £240 for mine with the quad LNB

Are there any alternatives to sky+?
Not that I know of, nearest thing, I suppose, is Tivo

Will it work with normal sky, Ie if I ever decide to get rid of the sky, will it work on normal tv/freeview?
Can't help you there.
In all honesty, it really is worth getting.

Sky+ doesn't work with Freeview. TiVo is superior in features but doesn't have the dual record function. Hopefully the Government will force Sky to release their encryption system to any third party so that we can see a new model TiVo in the UK with dual satellite tuners.

Humax are rumoured to be working on a new TiVo for the UK to replace the discontinued Thomson model.

Cheers,
Alex

Is it worth having?
yes, absolutely, for once it does exactly what its press says.

What happens to yr existing digibox?
You keep it, or for an extra £10 a month get it set up somewhere elsa in your house with an extra subscription. Alternately you can use it (Free) for unencoded freeview channels such as BBC1 etc. The sky quad LNB will have two connections left, you can use one of them (DIY) to run a cable to the extra box.

I've heard it's £199 but also heard it is cheaper
Paid £199 + £1 fitting for mine with the quad LNB (web offer see www.sky.com)

Are there any alternatives to sky+?
Tivo or freeview hard drive such as pace as seen in Argos catalogue, alos DVD recorder with harddrive built in.

Will it work with normal sky, Ie if I ever decide to get rid of the sky, will it work on normal tv/freeview?
No, the harddrive recorder bit needs a subscription to Sky+ to work. However, someone later may come up with a way of overriding this.

If you are prepared to pay a £30 + subscription/month for years to come then it is worth getting. If you are trying to get a good piece of kit for free then it isnt, if you dont keep up your subscription.

Just want to point out that you don't pay any subscription for Sky+ if you have any of the premium packages, its free

and Rotty, many people seem to use Sky without connecting the box to the telephone line yet thats how they do their software upgrades

dba, you can force the Sky+ to upgrade without the telephone line. It is upgraded through the satellite.

to clarify my earlier points.

If you pay a sky subscription over £30 (i.e. two premium rate channels) then you dont need to pay the Sky+ subscription of £10. If you opt to have Sky+ only i.e. use the functionality of the hard disc drive recorder then you will need to pay £10 a month subscription and will be able to record/view the following free channels:

its great. only downside is that it relies on recording via the listings. if a programme runs late, it can miss the end. eurosport wrc coverage a perfect example.
many a time ive sat down to whatch the action from the previous day and had the last 15 mins of a boxing match and the first 15 mins of rallying!

Guys, does the Sky+ EPG give you content DETAIL on later programmes, or is it like normal Sky and only gives extra detail on the programmes currently on air.

Had Telewest out 4 times this week, and they still need to run a whole new cable; nightmare with getting off work etc, so SKY+ it is! Astronauts fix that which means I can get more done at work

when i really want something recorded, such as a match,i use the manual facility, and i add an hour at the end, this also avoids the problem of forgetting those little news bulletins that split the programmes and you miss half
