okey dokey mate. You want to get all the x's on one side and the normal numbers on the other. (signs change when you swap sides e.g. - turns to +)
5x + 9 = 54 - 4x (take the -4x to the left side to give 5x+4x =9x)
(take the +9 to the right side to give 54 - 9)
9x = 54 - 9
9x = 45 (divide the 45 by 9 to leave x on it's own)
x = 45/9
x = 5
hope that helps mate

It might help to not think of moving it across but that you are adding 4x to both sides.
Consider a simple equation of 5 = 5.
Add 4 to both sides to keep it even, 9 = 9.
Move on to 4x = 4 (obviously x = 1).
Again add 4 to both sides, 4x + 4 = 8 (x still = 1).
So basically as long as you apply the same operation to both sides of the equation, it will keep the equation in balance.
So your initial equation, 5x + 9 = 54 - 4x becomes (when you add 4x ot both sides)
5x + 4x + 9 = 54 - 4x + 4x, hence 9x + 9 = 54
Same when you get down to 9x = 45, divide both sides by 9 to give
9x/9 = 45/9 => x = 5
