The new rules mean that keepers who fail to re-license their vehicle (or declare SORN) will incur an automatic penalty of £80 (reduced to £40 if paid within 28 days). Determined offenders will be faced with prosecution and could be fined a minimum £1000.
Ouch!

Will they bollocks fine you. If it gets to March, you'll get a fine. If you get your tax on Monday and they do send you a fine tell them you bought it saturday, they have to prove you didn't.

You may get away with it if you tax/sorn it tomorrow. Especially seeing that today is sunday, so you couldn't tax it if you wanted to anyway!

Mr.Scoobypreza needed tax this month he got his saturday morning at our local post office.
This is a small post office where they used to do everything by hand. But even they have got a computer system for car tax now.
They scanned the the v-whatever form tax reminder, then they scanned the new tax disk.
Then they give you a receipt and then the tax remnider form back. They dont need to keep that bit anymore.
So basically they know exactly where and when you bought your tax.

There must be some amount of time before you get a fine. You used to have so many days to get new tax after the old one expired didn't you????
Wonder if the new system is the same??
I've looked on the website but it doesn't say.
Be interesting to see if the fine comes straight away for anyone.

I think this new system is a load of B**** How many peole will sell a vehicle and give you the whole v5 as was done a few years back, and forget to send the green or red off to DVLA to inform them they`ve sold their vehicle.

Speaking from experiance i`ve got the blue part of the V5 for a vehicle i`ve owned for a week now, i`m going to tax it tommorrow and anyone want to guess what date i`m going to put down when vehicle was aquired.

But Mr innocent so and so, who god knows when he got rid of his, now my vehicle may get an eighty pound fine through the door just for selling not directly to me but for all i know it may have changed hands several times before I aquired it.

the point being is you should'nt be driving your car home with no tax. if you get stopped they could throw the book at you, being that your insurance and mot are void.

Not if the previous keeper had it insured, then my own insurance would cover me.

previous keeper being who i bought it from

But having said that i belive you can only insure a vehicle that you own. How do traders manage they`ve bound to have insurance on their car`s even if they dont technically own them, i:e not registred to them.

Insurance and MOT are valid regardless of tax. You need insurance to travel to and from an MOT centre, then you need the MOT and insurance to get the tax, unless things have changed drastically.

No insurance and i think no MOT are endorsable offences, for no road tax Police cannot Make you tax your car they can only report the matter to the DVLA.

when i last bough a s/h car from a dealer (a couple of months ago), it came without any tax. ford gave me a seven day cover note FOC so i could get it taxed. as it was getting towards the end of the moneth i wauted until the end of the week and then got a tax disc that started the following month. no fine resulted.

maybe the dvla are clever enough to work out that ford signed the vehicle over to me on the twenty whatever of november and i taxed it from 1st of december but frankly i would think they've got better things to worry about.

IIRC you have 14day before the automatic fine is issued, as if you get it in the 14 day period it will be back dated to the 1st of the month anyway.

I had to get my car taxed this month, and I was having problems getting it taxed. My insurance was due for renewal today 12 noon. I was changing insurance companies and so had a tempory cover note through the post which said my insurance would start at 12noon today. We are in the process of moving house, and have been packing stuff up since early December, first planned move date was 19th DEC, however issues over planning permission have pushed this back to next month However I digress. We packed up all the car documents in December not expecting to need them till after we had moved, so to get tax you need an MOT and insurance. Well as the MOT was due on the 6th Feb, I just went out and had the car MOTed on Friday to save the hassle of digging out the box with the documents in. Also thinking that a cover note for insurance starting today would be enough to prove the car will be insured for the next year.

Anyway got to the post office (Which had a huge queue) to be told that they need to see the certificate that expire in two days time rather than a document that shows the car to be insured for the next 12 months surley even the smallest amount of common sense would tell you that the certioficate for 12 months was a better document to see?

Anyway tried the other post office in the town, taking my insurance renewal notice with me to prove I currently had insurance on the car. The guy behind the counter just glanced at the tempory cover note and issued the tax without even checking the date.

SOME PEOPLE ARE SUCH A BUNCH OF JOBSWORTHS!!!!

Hope that makes sense, it still makes me cross just thinking about it

as long as the insurance is in date(and time) then you should be able to get it. so if you came in at 9am and i ran out at 12pm you should be ok as you are covered. no point bringing in post dated certificate as it all has to be valid when you tax it.
