Get a rescue cat from somewhere like the Blue Cross or RSPCA. It'll probably cost less, and more importantly, won't be encouraging the breeding of even more cats to worsen the general problem of unwanted kittens.
British Shorthair is just a generic name for a number of different cat breeds - are you after one breed in particular, or just looking for a good domestic pet? We've two ordinary black moggies and they're great pets, not to mention much more robust in terms of general health than a lot of pedigree breeds.

Thanks for coming back on this, we have been to our local Blue Cross at Burford and they have nothing and would not even put us on a list, not tried the RSPCA yet.
We are a bit green on cats and don’t know anything much about them, but as we have just lost our cat Pippin to diabetes, my wife would very much like another.
She just likes the British Short Haired ones and they look like teddy bears and are quite cute.
We would be happy to have a moggie if we could find one, and your comments about the lack of robustness of pedigree cats was noted.
So we are just looking for a nice female domestic pet Cat
Thanks for your help
Anyone have any leads……………………………???

It's an emotive subject so I won't say any more, but:
I do feel that if you're after a good family pet, then getting one from anywhere that breeds cats for profit is unfair when there are so many perfectly healty, good-natured cats waiting for new owners in rescue centres.
We got ours from the Blue Cross. They're twin sisters, both plain black moggies, and they were 1 yr old when we got them - so they were already spayed and house trained. Their previous owner had a problem with allergies and so had to give them up. It's a myth that rescue cats all come from troubled backgrounds and have behavioural problems - ours couldn't be better natured. Jess is cuddly, loves being around people and lives only to eat, while Jasmine is alert, playful and loves the outdoors.
One last note: kittens need lots of attention - they sleep a lot but are very active when they're awake, and they need to be fed at least four times a day. Is there someone in the house all day to play with and look after them? Rescue centres often won't let small kittens go to homes where there won't be people around all day, and it's for a good reason. Kittens are great fun but they do turn into cats rather quickly anyway. Don't overlook an older cat.

AndyC 772: Top advice m8, we have found two cats that are 5 months old, and we are going to see them, tonight.
The wife has got all the time in the world for her cats, so devotion to duty is not a problem.
The bit I like is the older cats have had all the servicing work done to them and are fully run in, using Scooby language.
Leslie: I think she will have both of these cats from the animal rescue centre, especially if the are adorable.
Redkop: If all else fails we now have some back up advice
Andypugh2000: We will try there as well, thanks.
Thank you all
I will post, how we get on later tonight + pictures if all goes well.

Here's two sisters I got from the Cats Protection League. Sadly the all tortie one got killed by a train when she was 7 months old. We still have the other one who is 3 years old now.

Most veterinary surgerys usually have a noticeboard with at least one "good home wanted for kitten/s" card. You could then ask the nurse if she knows the owner/advertiser and may even be able to ask the vet to check over. DL

The pictures I promised, Ahhhhh
Meet Gucci (all ginger) and Versace, we got them from West Oxfordshire Animal Rescue.
Paid £25.00 each donation for vets bills, they have been blood tested, vaccinated and spayed.
The lady was pleased they would get a second chance, and go to a good home.
Between you and me they will be well spoiled.
