Which martial art?
Right, I would like to start some form of martial arts, but there are so many to choose from!
What I am looking for is something that takes a LOT of hard work and will put me through hell and back I really need to get fit, and wouldn't mind some special moves to get one over on my dad
Hoping there are a lot of you on here who can help
TIA
Claire

kickboxing probably.. if you're mostly looking to get fit out of it.
if you're looking to be able to successfully defend yourself in 99.999%+ of situations then you need to do two martial arts.. one mostly striking art.. such as kickboxing... and one closer range arts such as jujitsu.

Milo, look up information on Kuk Sool Won - it does both and more to boot although a lot of the complex ground fighting doesn't come in until much later in the training (i.e. black belt). I'm not hard, far from it, but after just one year of training I've picked up enough that I feel I could keep myself out of trouble. You are taught pressure point strike points which are mental when struck - you drop like a sack of tatties and they aren't as hard to hit as you might think even with arms, etc swinging about randomly. The usual kicks, punches, etc are all taught as are loads and loads of techniques. Techniques are taught and performed from stance (it is a traditional art afterall) but that isn't the point of them. Through learning them you learn which way the body does and does not like to move. When I go to ground with my brother (in true childish fashion ) he knows I'm hunting for a leg or an arm. If I get one the lock is applied and its game over
The other day I had a brown belt do knife attack techniques on me (i.e I was trying to stab him) They were seriously and were very effective.
Best thing to do is a martial art the builds confidence. Our instructor has prevented several fights just by the 'look' (has to be seen to be believed). You just know that if you mess you WILL get pummeled and even the neds seem to understand it and back down

the line of thinking im coming from tho is both from experience and the fact that most of the top mma / shootfighters have two main martial arts... a striking specialty, and a close-range/grappling specialty.
im very non-confrontational.. but used to work as a doorman in some very rough areas while at school (i had to for the money).. and on the (fortunately) rare occasions i had to get into things physically.. one long-range strike and one choke hold worked 100% of the time. but yeah.. as u say, the confidence results in no confrontation most of the time.

I often recall a story one of our black belts told us about his doorman days. A scuffle broke out and for whatever reason he ended up on the ground with some 16+ stone dude pretty much sitting on him. He said, 'did my black belt training help me here? Well no, but common sense and biting the guy in the ***** did' LMAO

Who's R?
Anyway, a girl I used to work with does kickboxing, and she goes along to classes every week in Edinburgh. She's taken beginners along before....I could put you in touch with her if you like. She certainly now has some interesting moves which she performs in the pub on demand!!!
She's a crazzeee girl, but dead friendly.
