Stuck between a rock and a hard place - job dilema
Hi All,
Been on a short term contract recently(at a company Ive done a year and half at before as a permy).
So, they tell me my contract will come to an end, BUT they offer me the job as a permy on a MASSIVE and I mean MASSIVE pay cut. Thats not the worst bit.
The problem is, the notice period I will have to sign up to will be 3 months, yep 3.............. How the hell could I ever get another job on a 3 month notice period? Basically historically it used to take ages to train for it, but times have changed and it can now be done easily in 1 month(we had another temp guy in who proved this).
I dont want the job as such - its a no brainer going no where BUT I dont want to be on the dole
I'm trying to re-negotiate but I think they know I just want more time to get another job so will say NO.
So what do you do??? Hope you find something pronto or take the job and hope something else will come along and the company will wait for you.
My other thought was accept the job(with 3 month notice) then resign a week later, thus giving me another 3 months paid to get a job - banking on the fact that within those 3 months Ill find something???

Regardless of anything else - start looking for another job now. You are not going to be happy going back there and see it as fail safe to avoid the dole. Start looking and if you have to, take the job but hold off on signing anything.

Are you sure there won't be a "probabtion" period for the 1st few months, where the notice period is more like a week or two?
Every company I've worked for has had either a 1 or 3 month probation period!!
Just a thought.

If you dont find a job before the end of your current contract, tell them you will accept the new perm job but only on condition of 1 month notice period.
3 month notice period is not that uncommon, mostly depends on the type of job. On the up side, if they make you redundant, they will have to give you 3 months money! (But double check the contract to ensure both types of notice period, employer's and employee's are the same)

Im in Hampshire
I will have to take the job regardless, I cant afford to pay rent etc etc on the dole.......................If it comes to this(and it probably will, Im hoping to have few interviews before so I may get lucky) then Ill have to do like I say hand in my notice a week or so later. Wait 2 months then start re applying, that way my notice is down to 2 months................if at the end of that period I still dont have a job Ill have to temp / consider contracting.

But what happens if you sign a 3 month notice, find another job and simply walk out on them or at least say you are leaving in say 1 month? What can they do about it aside from withholding pay owing for breach of contract. I can hardly see them taking you to court and by then you won't need a reference from them. DL

i second what DL says - these long notice periods are very hard to enforce. just make sure that you walk out on pay day - the most you should lose is 2 weeks money. my people are only contracted for 2 weeks notice, and even then 90% of them don't give me that much

Hand your notice in when you get a job and, 1 month later, phone in sick (yuppie flu, stress or something hard to prove is a false illness) and don't go back. Leaves you free to start the new job.

ADP - something to consider for the future. I would look to specialise in a certain area. You're right about there being a lot of people who do similar things to you. What you need to look at is what people want. At the moment IT Security is very hot (I know, I work there and I've seen the salaries going up and I'm being approached an awful lot at the moment). Might be a good area to get into if you can.

Yep I quite agree - Im desperate to be able to call myself a real specialist to the point where I could sell my skills - I have some good skills, just looking to get into a sound company who will be prepared to invest in me Have a phone interview with such a place coming up, once(if) Im in I can begin to tool myself up

I agree with Chris - I'm a developer, and a couple of years back companies wanted all rounders who were good at 2-3 languages, could do support, sql etc etc, now it is specialist in depth stuff, hire someone to do a specific job to a high standard.
Downside is there are less opportunities as the roles are specific, upside is you are competing against less people.
There does seem to be a lot more contracting opportunties as a percentage of total roles available, more companies are using variable cost resourcing models now.
Anyway, good luck with the search.
