LOTR Trilogy - the short version
Ok, so they go to hell and back for months to try and destroy the ring. The film/book could have been shortened to about 30 minutes and here is how:
Gandy: Frodo, this is the ring of power. The one ring to rule them all! It must be destroyed!
Frodo: How??
Gandy: You must take it to the fire mountains of mount due and return it to the fires from which it was forged!
Frodo: How do we get it there, how do we get to Mordor Gandalf?
Gandy: Its ok, I'm mates with these Eagle dudes we can fly there, drop it off and be home for tea
THE END
In this version a lot less people die

I once wrote a few similar scripts doing the "what would have really happened" versions of films. For example, Terminator:
Arnie gets beamed to the past, finds Sarah Conner, kills her The End.

Gandy: I need this ring destroyed in the fires of mount doom
Frodo: sure ....."hello fedex, i have a package thats needs delivering"
no one dies , but they argue about who will pay the fedex acc for months
can it get shorter!!!

Back to the Future Trilogy
Doc Brown slip, hits his head on the toilet and comes up with the idea for the flux-capacitor which will make time travel possible.
Doc Brown ponders for a second the dangers of time travel and potentially interfering with the time line and decides as any reasonable scientist would that its too dangerous. Goes and makes himself a cup of tea and works on his other inventions.
The end

has already been done; a book came out in the late '60's called 'Bored of the Rings' and it was a lot shorter then the Tolkien version.
only thing I remember about it, was that one on the main characters was called 'Bilbo B*gger', so named because of the un-natural practises he was known to indulge in with Elves.
