Anyone know about TVs? £1750 credit note at Currys - what to get?
My parents bought a TV from Currys whcih went TU. We now have a £1750 credit note and want to get the largest, best TV for the money. Don't mind topping credit note to make it, say, £2000.
Can I get a decent 42" from them? In store they dont seem to have much, but can try to order one or price match a more expensive one.
Help!

Whoa Stu!
Thanks for the quick reply!
Is it a good TV? Price is very good, of course.
Discount code would be handy. Would that have to be an Internet purchase though and what reason do we say we are using the discount code?
Thank a mill!

I saw the TV last week and ok it wasnt quite as good as the 4K JVC but put it this way if I had 2K it would be going on that. You can see it at most stores. I saw that last week at mine.
The quality was outstanding with good contrast and id be chuffed to take it home. Only thing it doesnt include is a wall mount bracket, but then again neither do any of the others

do these things have to be wall-mounted? not much help as it needs to go into a corner! hopefully it comes with stands!
i dont think you can use credit notes online
normal widescreens come in 36" max - couldn't see a 42" one.
Wouldn't sell on as parents bought the extended guarantee thingy!

whats the score with these rear projection TVs?
Seems like the way to go! 50" for under 2k!!!
Surely there must be some disadvantage?

Rear projections
Rear Projection TVs are a cheaper way to get a big screen than plasma because its a cheaper technology as the image is just projected onto the screen by 3 lamps rather than fancy plasma gases.
The only disadvantage really is the amount of space they use, they tend to be very bulky and take up quite a bit of room.
If you're playing with that sort of money, why not go the whole way and get a front projector and a projection screen for under £2k and if you have the wall space have a 200" by 200" screen

Plasma
The only reservation i have about plasma at the moment is that if they go wrong and they do (I work for a major brand name TV/Audio company) theyre amazingly expensive to repair... for example a certain plasma producing company will charge > £500 JUST to pick up your plasma and take it away for inspection if its outside of warranty!

i have a top of the range sony projector and they are mint have an 8 ft screen and i would never change it for a plasma as i think mine is better quality but you need to add a lot more cash to your budget to get the same, but ther are some cheaper ones with excelent quality and far superoir to projection tv's

I am about to purchase a Toshiba 36ZP38 after a lot of research, although I wont be buying from Currys they have this TV for somethin like £1480 which would leave you a bit spare for a progressive scan DVD player to get amazing pictures, comes complete with stand,

i am a little worried about the plasma becauase i have also heard that their reliability is not too good.
anyone have any experience of the one described above?
also, why do all the 42" screens have different visible size screens? surely they should all be 42", unless they are measuring the plastic edges or something else...

Tosh wh36 is the way to go. Superb piece of equipment available in 42 51 & 61 inch versions. Be carefull that it comes with prog. scan as I was viewing in Currys yesterday and there 42 could not do prog. on terrestrial seems like it could be some sort of cut down version.

If the original telly went TU - as you said - why didn't they get a refund, rather than a credit note? My advice would be to take the money and go to somewhere like John Lewis that isn't staffed with 16 year olds who wouldn't know one end of a SCART lead from the other and get a free 5 year guarantee thrown in (and they will normally price match)!

I would also steer clear of plasma at this price. 2 grand is very much at the bottom end. You still need to be paying nearly double that for top quality plasma screens (have a look at the Pioneer PDP-434 for some idea of what a good plasma should be).
By all means take the advice of eveyone on here, but go and look at the TVs yourself. See what suits you. Picture quality wise, there is still not much to beat a good quality CRT.

Did this a few weeks back with a mate....
He had similar budget and ended up with a 36" widescreen for around £1100, the cheap plasmas were poor, LCD's are too expensive and apparenlty are coming down 15% a year, a mate has a 52" rear projection and unless room is dark and you are directly in front of it picture is very poor, and heard that replacing bulbs in projectors can be up to £400 a throw, bulb can last between 1 and 2000 hours apparenlty, like any bulb may just give up.....
Why not get the top end widescreen, like the toshiba mentioned, and throw in a nice DVD/dolby system as well.....
