Want to spend £3000 on a 42" plasma TV - What do you think?
I want to buy a Philips Plasma TV that is 42" and costs £3120.00 at cost price from a stockist.
Am I wasting my money because these will come down in price...
Have I got more money than sense, because I have never spent so much money apart from my WRX (£9000).
Has anyone got a Plasma TV
The one on offer is the Philips 42PF 9965 for £3120 (I will not have to pay the VAT cos company will claim back).
Please advise... Thanks

My friend has one! Excellent piece of kit, but you need a pretty large room to pull it off without it being overbearing. Then again, you might want it to be for £3000!!!

IMO anyone who spends more than a few hundred quid on a telly needs their head looked at. OTOH, £900 for an moving coil pick up cartridge - i can see the sense in that.
just depends on your priorities, i suppose.

There is a new Panasonic plasma out this year, it will be announced at some trade show this month but deliveries from about July. The current ones are ace and well worth buying, mine gets delivered today (yipeee). But look for a good discount over the list as it is being superseded. There are offers already in the High Street. Picture quality depends very much on the source. A good quality (not 50 pounds) DVD player and Sky plus will be good, with terestrial poor. High cost leads are an absolute must, aim to spend between 80- and a 100 on each lead.............

Being honest, 3 grand for a 42" plasma is pretty cheap. Top notch stuff from Pioneer and Panasonic is still going to cost you over 4K, so bear that in mind when you view the TV (you have watched it haven't you? Plasma screens vary hugely in their picture quality / sound quality / input leads, types of sockets etc etc - make sure you check this).
Also, consider buying it (or a similar one) from John Lewis - they give you a free 5 year warranty on all TVs - something that could prove extemely useful with a plasma screen.

Mark,
So where did you get yours from? This model was apparently launched around Sept 03. I should be paying £3120.00 I will not need to pay the VAT.
Its the PF42 9965
What are your thoughts... I will ring John Lewis to see what the RRP is, however have you had any problems with it, wha's the quality like and al the rest...
Thanks in advance

I got it from Harrods, it was on sale. I'm saying it is the same one but not 100% sure as I'm in the office at the moment. Just with a 5 sec search on the internet you can get them for 3450 incl vat so just doesn't seem that good a deal if that's what you think it is. sure, it's a fair price but not a bargain. As for the TV, it is great quality. The only thing I would say is if you want to wall mount it it's not great as it has a tuner box, you'd be better without one with this if you want to wall mount. Even standing, the Tuner box is pretty large and a bit of a pain to store. I just think with Plasma's unless you wall mount it you may as well get a normal TV as I think that is the whole point of them. You get them recessed into the wall.

Actually thats a bit harsh on council house tennants, how about "Mirror reading, Labour voters"?
I guess, if you have a seperate room they are "cool as", but in a lounge it's uncool.
IMHO

when i lived in a flat one of the families in the block opposite had the biggest fookin tv i have ever seen. i remember the day that it got delivered. it was like:
"no way will this fookin thing go up those stairs"
"oh yes it will"
"oh no it won't"
it did - eventually. it took up about half of the livingroom and lit up the whole neighbourhood when it was turned on. this was a family of 4 living in a 2 bed flat.
cool, eh?

I got a 42" Panasonic plasma and its the dogs danglies imho. Separate tuner box which is the bit thats most likely to go wrong, so hopefully repairs shouldn't be a big issue (touch wood!).
Shopped around, decided which model I wanted, found the cheapest online price I could, went to the local TV shop and offered them €100 more to include delivery and installation (not included in online price), after some moaning they agreed 'cos I was obviously going to go for the online version otherwise. Saved 40% on the shops marked price! I'm happy

Philips aren't very good IMHO
The Philips plasmas (and Sony) are far from the cream of the crop at the moment. At the £3k price range you can easily have the current top plasmas from Panasonic and Hitachi. I have been very strongly dissuaded from the Philips screens by many in the know. Empire were selling the Hitachi 3000 for £2k recently, but AFAIK they've sold them all in readiness for a new model, but it's worth checking. Pioneers are exceptional at the moment, but are expensive and will only be at their best with matching HDMI DVD players. Best bet is Panasonic and I'd recommend getting the best price you can find on the net, and then get John Lewis (.com) to price match it as when you buy any plasma from them you get a free 5 year guarantee.
I might be able to lay my hands on a brand new Philips and Sony plasma for around £1800 each if your interested.
Forgot to add, lots of helpful info available here .
Panasonic £2380-2800 here
John Lewis here

You will have to pay the VAT as part of the purchase price from your company. A VAT registered company must charge VAT on any sales it makes within the scope of VAT, even if they are to non-VAT registered entities such as yourself.
If your company is mainly an exporter and has an exemption certificate then you may be OK. This works if the principle activity is related to plasmas as anything else would be treated as evasion.

Anyway you should buy a projector instead

One thing to watch out for is that they can 'burn in' quite easily if the same picture remains on the screen for a reasonable period. A 'mega pop star' that I know had one for two days and burnt his out - not made unusable but the ruddy screen had a ghost image burnt in. He's so loaded it didn't matter, but for us less loaded people be careful!
