It's based on the 100 isn't it? anything 100+ is above average, 100- is below.
Anyway, it's not what you've got but how you use it. There's also knowledge and attitude which IQ doesn't test. Knowledge comes from experience, your intelligence can determine how you interpret that knowledge. Your attitude determines how you use the knowledge you've earned. Well that's my half hearted bo**ocks theory anyway

There was a thread about this just a few weeks ago - and yes, 100 is supposed to be average. I doubt you'll get many people posting to say they have in IQ less than that, though!
IQ affects the ability to acquire knowledge, so some IQ tests do include questions that simply require knowledge rather than being 'pure' mathematical, verbal or spatial tests. Verbal reasoning questions in particular rely on this - having the appropriate vocabulary is essential.
