Hello
At the moment, hotels in Eastern European capitals are stupidly priced. I am currently writing this from Bucharest, where the list price for the Hilton is $350 per night. We get a discount, bringing it down to "only" $190.
Have a search through: http://www.destinationrussia.com to get some idea of the prices.
And be careful when you go, I wouldn't recommend wandering aimlessly at night.
Steve.

Hello Mart
I really wouldn't want to book a hotel at that price in Moscow....
Seeing the sights during the day is fine, it's just at night when the more interesting section of society comes out to play.

According to my girl and her friend, its going to be London prices sorry and this is for both Moscow or St Petersberg. But if you want a 3 star accomondation for cheapish prices, give me a PMS and they'll set you up. Oh they also say that foreigners gets charged more than locals so be aware of that.

As K said. St Pete is just as pricey as Moscow, both are approaching London prices.
We stayed at the Hotel Moskva last time, at the wrong end of Nevsky Prospekt. I think it was about 80 dollars a night (1999), grand old wreckage, huge cold rooms, crap food. Not sure if they speak English though!
I have no probs going out at night but I lived there for 2.5 years and know vaguely what's what.
Still remember emailing my brother from Moscow saying "you've heard about how Russia is in poverty? I just saw a Lamborghini LM002 outside the university..."
