Unless your sister has declared the car SORN, she's up for a fine..............
Though they are only started to issue fines from this month on, preferring to advertise the fines first to give people a chance to learn, so she might be lucky,
As for the taxing bit, you have 14 days after the tax expired to buy your new tax or get the SORN sent off before a fine is sent.

I think theres quite a bit of hype around all this. As long as you don't miss a month I believe you'll be OK.
Don't lose any sleep over it, unless you're tax evading scum

They've started sending fines out already. My mum and dad got one last month. Its reduced to £40 if you pay within so many days. My mum was furious with my dad he promised to sort out the sorn thingy but he never got round to it..... doh!

I heard on the radio that the computer searches through the records on the 14th of the following month, so if your tax expired 31/03 and you don't tax it by 14/05, they'll have you, but everywhere else suggests it would be the 14/04 that they be looking for you. Who knows?

I have two bikes that have been sat in my garage untaxed for a *while*. No reminder yet and I didn't fill in a SORN either. If they do send a fine I'll just write back and ask why they didn't get the SORN I filled in .....
Just being awkward. They say this system is to cut untaxed cars on the road. Bo%%ux it is .... to do that they should get more cops chasing untaxed cars actually on the road.
Dave

Well I went down to tax the car yesterday and the girl behind the desk never batted an eyelid, I called DVLA who said that technically they could fine you if you were one day late but that they were not fining anyone unless they went one month late taxing vehicle
As for SORN I have had a vehicle in the garage for the last 5 years (can't be arst spending a few weeks to get it finished of!) Once you have filled out the SORN form you are ok for 12months but they send you another when you tax is due for renewal so I don't know how you will get away with "you must have lost the SORN I filled in scenario!"
Thanks for the comments though.

I think (cant now remember exact dates DVLA gave to me) only cars that have had a tax disc associated with them after 1998 need to have a SORN made for them. I have 2 cars that have never touched a road since before the date I cant remember now and DVLA said they didnt need SORNs.
I you declare a SORN against a car then ever 12months from the date you declare it you need to make a new declaration. They are now supposed to send you a reminder, but as the remainders for tax renewal are so hit and miss I cant see SORN reminder happening, and if you forget there is that nice fine.
I was given a non-running car, no MOT, already out of Tax. I trailered it home, reversed trailer into garage and offloaded it. Went on 2 weeks holiday, totally unaware that a new SORN was required when a change of owners occurs. Brown envelope in post with fine a couple of weeks later.
