a guy at work prefers to be called seem, just to confuse matters a little more, I have to talk to a lot of different nationals everyday, you should just start the convo of with how would you like me to pronounce your name as I dont want to offend you.

Call him Mr and use his surname, unless that's equally unpronounceable.

Failing that, just ring him and ask him how he pronounces his name.

a turkish aquaintance of mine is called 'Caglar'....this is pronounced chullar.
So I would presume Cem would be...chem, using the ch as in cheap.
And before anyone jumps on the band wagon....I couldn`t think of another word with the sounding 'ch'.......(just to cover myself, politically correctness)

There are 2 'c's in the Turkish alphabet. The first one is a normal C as per my first name. This is pronounced J, so for me (Cem) it's pronounced Jem.
The second is Ç and is pronounced CH (as in chimney). My name is Cem Koçu, pronounced Jem Kochu.
Cheers,
Cem

You're aquaintance's name is actually spelt Çaĝlar (the ĝ is a silent g and isn't pronounced).
