One of my salesmen was due back to work today after being in The Dominican Republic. He should have landed yesterday afternoon at Manchester. This morning However I got a call from his dad saying that the flight had been delayed so as such he won't be in today but tomorrow instead!!!
Is there an Easy way to check if a flight has been delayed etc. Yes I am checking up on him, but the guys a bit sneaky if you know what I mean!

Hiya Kend, I've tried that but it doesn't tell me if a flight has been delayed, just if it has landed. Now looking at the flights, nothing has arrived this morning which is when he was meant to have arrived according to Dad's alibi, but I can't seem to find out if a plane landed last night. I think he's booked the dates off on Holiday, then has taken an extra day to which he was not entitled!

Sounds like you need to build more trust within your organisation. When I ran a haulage company one thing I always developed was trust, understanding and respect. If you had any of these qualities in your organisation your staff would not see a need to come up with paltry excuses to take time off. If the guy is sciving, ask yourself why. Do you try to develop honesty in your office? Without openess and honesty you cannot hope to team build and move forward in a mature structured manner. The fact that you mistrust the whereabouts of this guy also suggests to me that you have lost control of the discipline. Without discipline you cannot have control of your business, it will go nowhere easily. You will forever be looking over your shoulder and running around like a blue ar$ed fly instead of managing the situations and predicting problems before they arise. I will not knock you for what you are trying to do at this stage, but the first thing you must do on this guys return is ask him WHY he didn't phone you himself. Be open firm and assertive and do not give in to his excuses. You need to be firm. If his excuses look paltry and you feel you have a case for misconduct then I suggest you discuss with your HR Manager the implications of firing him and whether he would have a case for unfair dismissal. Sack him if necessary, this will send out strong signals to the rest of your team that you mean business. Then take them all out for a pint after work. This will help build a platform for developing trust from the remaining team members.

Mike - sounds like you have a very good understanding of people - especially sales guys. They are all lazy barsatrds who will never tell the truth if they can think up a good lie.
Slightly more seriously, running a haulage company is completely different to managing a sales team. Apart from anything else, sales are a lot more assertive (some would say aggresive) than most other occupations so the relationship with the manager is rarely as cuddly as elsewhere.
