There are good and bad points, like anywhere really. location is really good, not too far from london as well as the midlands and the north. and the shopping is abysmal but most people go to milton keynes, which is heaven.
does have dodgy areas, but thre nice parts are really nice and the schools are good too.
overall, a good place to bring up a family, but not the best place if you are looking for fun and nightlife.

Northamptonshire is OK. We live on the East side, on the other side of the M1, as the countryside is much nicer that way. Otherwise the town is just like any other British town of its size-overcrowded, overtrafficked and full of roadworks.

Once had a cracking night out in Northampton a couple of years ago after a day watching F3 qualifying at Silverstone. Raceday wasn't much fun with the MOA hangovers!
My best mate lived just outside Northampton (Rushden) for a while; that seemed a reasonable area. He used to go down to MK for nights out rather than into Northampton.

Oh, and by the way. The Police in Northampton just love speed cameras. It's got to be one of the worst places I know. They have those mobile vans out all of the time. They also have SPECS cameras on some of the minor roads.

Housing - Nice areas in town and to the west of town there are a good few new(ish) estates. Like davyboy says avoid the eastern district.
Shops - Average for a town centre. Milton keynes is 20 min away by train or car and has good shopping and leisure.
Leisure - Lots of new health clubs in town, and plenty of good golfing within a few miles of town. Two big cinemas, some good restaurants, lots of swish bars. Three ****/ned clubs and two good ones. One other being refurbed at the moment. Lots of country parks etc within few miles. Three large parks in town. Good rugby team. Silverstone and rockingham circuits 20 min drive.
One of the best things about n'pton or numpty as the locals call it is its central position. It doesnt take too long to drive to a lot of other places. Northamptonshire borders more counties than any other.

Everybody in Bucks and Beds avoids Northampton for the following reasons :-
1) Town centre is filthy and full of chavs
2) Speed camera Hell - one very few feet
3) A while back a gang of Albanians(IIRC) took over the shopping centre.. not a good sign..
I'd suggest going to one of the nice villages in the area.

2) Whats the problem with this in town? Do you speed in town centres?
3) There was a fight that was quickly dealt with.

Pieman2,
depends on what you are looking for.
I moved to the town from southern Essex just over 3 years ago.
I like the fact that the area is not that busy.
You can always park in the town centre on a Saturday (average shops, but Milton Keynes is not far away).
Its not compulsory to dress up in your best designer clothes on a night out.
Only takes a few mins (if that) to get to the countryside and have a blast.
I do get the impression that the local health service is rubbish and that its impossible to get a dentist (I have been naughty and are still registered with my doctor 100 miles away).
Listen to Davyboy for areas to move to.

I've lived in or Northampton all my life but I've never heard anyone refer to it as numpty?
Like every town/city it has its good and bad points. One of the best (as people have said before) is that it's nice and central to a lot of counties with very good links to most. Although the "safety" camera situation is getting beyond a joke

I can only comment on these places that I've been to for various periods of time.
Rushden- sh1te town with some crap pubs and a history of shoemaking. Full of neds and unmarried benefit mothers and also a nice curry house whose name I can't remember.
Higham Ferrers- small village offshoot of Rushden- a sh1te place with a weekend street violence and ned problem. Good pub called the green dragon filled with neds/student types at the weekend, other than that OK.
Kettering- a town populated by villainous 6 toed scumbags with the obligatory push chair benefit mothers and a total lack of anything to do other than beat each other- GOOD.
Billing Mill- ****e lake/leisure complex type place frequented by low rent midlander types who like to think they come from "down south" as if that in some way makes them any less scummy. Car park full of rep mobiles and similar ****e, basically the "honest god fearing" scumbag type like to go there for low rent thrills surrounded by other family wielding idiots of the same ilk.
Northampton- spiritual home of the burberry cap and low rent/meaningless low level violence capital of the krypto-midlands.
The whole area is mediocre in the worst sense of the word. ******* sh1te.

I lived (survived) in Kettering for 2 and a half years; amazing similar to Bromsgrove near Brum, both visually/ for the weekend violence/ and general lack of anything to do whatsoever- only thing I enjoyed was burying all the chavs in their Nova's with my GPG N Pug of the time.
A mate ran the N.hampton branch of HMV, got threatened by gangs on a reg basis.

Yes you can get out of the place nice and quickly, has to be a plus point. I'd rather live in Birmingham and believe me if you've ever spent time there you'll know how crap Northampton is if Birmingham offers a better alternative.

I don't like Birmingham at all, doesn't feel safe to me. I prefer London as a city, but maybe thats what I am more used too.
As some of you have started talking about Northamptonshire, what about beautiful Corby?
I don't think there are that many chavs in Northampton, I have been to towns with a huge amount more.

I find it as a place, generally very unfriendly.
Theres a big stigma about the eastern side, but it's not "all" bad, just parts of it.
The sainsburys in Duston is cr4p (no good currys ), theres bloody dual carriageways everywhere, everyone is always in a rush, it's v overpriced and the places that are "prestigious" are so close to the M1 it's all you can hear.
Women wear more sovereign rings and have more tattoos than the men and there's too many dodgy geezers in old 2nd hand Porsches
At this moment, I REALLY wish we hadn't moved here

As for the Porsche comment, I never classed Davyboy or his cars as dodgy.
