Checking Someone's Criminal Record
Any ideas on how I can find out if someone has a criminal record?
Not the Des O'Connor or Max Bygraves variety, by the way.....
What I mean is, how can I check if someone has any convictions and, if so, when these were, and for what?
There's someone causing trouble in our area, and all the neighbours suspect that he's been inside , but we have no evidence......

Yes Chip, but what would you do about it? Also convicted of what? You wouldn't want a murderer I suppose, but how about someone who had gone to jail for refusing to pay their council tax increase? Ever heard of the rehabilitation of offenders act?
If someone in the neighborhood is causing trouble, then go through the courts or complain to the environmental services of the local council. Whether they have been to jail is irrelevant.

How narrow minded is it to say " I wouldnt want to live nect door to a convicted criminal."
Surely the nature of the conviction, the circumstances in which the crime was committed and other factors bare a high degree of relevance.
Incidentally, dont think that people who have been inside are all dumbass smackheads. You'd be surprised . But I gues you have to have a bit of a broader outlook than Chip's to look beyond the skin.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Just to clarify, the person in question is alleged to have been inside for Armed Robbery....
Does that change any views?

I know a reformed car thief or 2. Someone thats been inside for an assault of some kind. And someone thats "apparently" been up on a Armed robbery charge. And a couple of dealers. I trust all of them except the car thieves, but thats because Im not sure they're completely reformed. Think that if someone offered them a job they "might" take it.
Others realised early that they needed to stop that life before it bit them hard.
Im not saying all ex-convicts are decent people but until they give me a reason not to trust them or to suspect them I wont bring it into any conversations.
IMHO

well if he is causing trouble. speak to the local police station/area police officer.
if u document his trouble causing maybe an ASBO would be appropriate.
if he has alleged to have committed an armed robbery then he will have a criminal record.
is it just curiosity that u want to know. or for u own safety or families safety.

Molly - for safety. He's been threatening a few people/families round here....
RR_WW - This bloke certainly ain't 'reformed'.... The whole village has turned agaibst him as a result of his aggressive & anti-social behaviour.

Other than your satisfying your curiosity, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference if he has been "inside for armed robbery". Won't make you or anyone else feel any safer either knowing that he has or hasn't
Or is it that it might make you feel less safe on the basis that big bad convicted armed robber is lurking the streets and next time he looks at me I'll cower even lower in my boots and run away 'cos he's a big bad convicted armed robber.
Or 'cos he isn't a big bad convicted armed robber I can stand a bit straighter and give it back to him a bit.
I guess then you have to hope that he justn't isn't some pyscho nutter ******* who likes inflicting pain for the hell of it
That is not dealing with the situation. It makes not 2 hoots of difference whether he's an ex-con or not. It is how you respond to this bloke. He's obviously an a-hole so you either avoid him or find some way of getting him out the area. Sounds to me just like village tittle-tattle You're (collectively) either going to have to deal with the present situation or put up with it and knowing if he's a convicted armed robber is not going to assist in anyway.
Good luck anyway.

Fair point Puff. But, having said that, I've just been in touch with someone in another village in the area who's given me his recent crim number.
At least knowing 100% what he was in for would help us all find a suitable way of 'dealing' with the situation.....

So if he was convicted of Armed Robbery and murder after killing a building society employee. (worst case scenario) Are you going to let him just get on with being a complete ****. Or are you going to stock up on guns and fight to the death over him cutting his grass at 9am on a sunday morning?

I know that
Thats not really giving examples are they?
But my point was really, what are you going to do "if" he was an armed robber? How are YOU going to deal with him in the future armed (no pun) with this knowledge?

*If* he has an armed-robbery conviction the chances are he is total scum, whatever the do-gooders may think about him now being reformed after serving his time. Just need to wait until he assaults someone or worse before the police and the criminal justice system can lawfully (but temporarily) act to remove him from society again.
I think it's great that the law doesn't protect the decent majority from the low-life minority.

Not everyone is destined to repeat the same mistakes over and over. Some people take being released as a chance to reshufle their pack. To try and find a new way.

Well Harry Boy, if you have spoken to him and he was threatening and abusive then why do you need to know hes got a criminal record? Surely his behaviour is sufficient to form an informed opinion of him.
