Charring Cross -> Embankment (either Northern or Bakerloo line southbound for one stop)
Embankment - > High Street Kensington (Circle Line for seven stops westbound)

You do not take the tube from Charing Cross to Embankment. You'll find the amount of time you spend walking underground to get to the platform would be better off spent walking the 200 yards down Villiers Street to Embankment tube station. Then the Circle line, as previously suggested.
