Question P900; what DON'T you like?

Have you got a P900?

If so, what DON'T you like about it?

I have an opportunity to buy one on Thurs evening at discount (shop does it for regulars every 6 mths), never seen one working and not sure if I can before then, wondering if I should take the gamble to replace my almost 5 yr old Nokia 9110. Which I also bought sight unseen and have frankly regretted it ever since (though true there was nothing else on the market at the time).

Particularly, can you get extra applications for it, like Word, Excel, and does it file-synch easily with them?

Saw the Sony demo on-line, the contacts didn't show addresses! strange...

Or is it worth me waiting another six months to get the Nokia 9500?

It's quite big but not a problem at all for me, even when out in a club/pub. The max size memory stick it can take is 128Mb which is poor IMHO when there are larger Duo Pro sticks available. You can get a word and excel viewer for it but you can't edit the domuments. The camera is Ok but nothing special.

those are the negative points. As a phone/PDA combo I think at the momnet it's hard to beat. Loads of apps available and more so every day. Have a look here for more info http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewforu...451acc1e4fe032

file sync is a big weakness with the P800, I'd guess the P900 is the same. You cannot automatically sync files. With my iPAQ there is a sync files folder, were anything in that folder will be sync'd. There is, as far as I know, nothing like this for P900. you have to manually copy files over!

cheers,

Greg

Thanks guys.

Just looked on google at several reviews and fora...

2 points came up:

1. There are no profiles! I love my Nokia switching between "silent", "office", "outdoor" etc. Is this true?

2. New model coming out end of this year; 1.3mp camera, Symbian 8.0, DuoPro stick capability...

What I didn't say in earlier post is it'll be my own hard-earned cash and I expect to keep it for 3-4 years... so if I have to wait six months for the perfect product, so be it!

After a Nokia 9110 for 5 years, its size I can handle Had it in a shirt pocket at the weekend, bent down to put on a slipper, it dropped out and straight onto my big toe, YEOW!!! Went to some shop, and a woman said a friend of hers was mugged, so she hit the guy with the Communicator!!

Gotta find out more about these rumours...

the reason i didnt get one is that the XDA2 is the same thing but running pocket pc....which means all the apps are allready there and being used in ipaqs, etc

as such file syncing and such is easy....im also running tomtom3 with a bluetooth gps link in the car....all very asy to set up.

I've had mine 2 weeks now & it's been fine.

I'm over the moon because I have gone from 2 phones, a pda, mp3 & diary down to 1 phone (with the other diverted to it) which is the main reason I bought it

Sync works fine for me, no it doesnt have profiles like a Nokia - but that never bothered me as I only used General & Silent, all I have to do is click the 'silent' option on the list.

You can also put it into flight mode where it turns the phone bit off so you can still sue the PDA etc

Also a big bonus is I can play Lemmings

Right, registered on that site, maybe I'll be able to read it soon...

Greg, "cheap" is about 430ukp, and I found it in UK for about 480 on the web, so its a saving, but not a massive saving!

Haven't seen XDA2s for sale here, only the XDA - for the same price as the P900

I got mine free as part of a deal from IgIndex - P900 was free and was on a 12 month contract at £12/month all-in. So, that works out at about £144 in total.

Think they are still doing the deal, but it's £50 for the phone now, and £12/month....

I didn't think I'd like it that much, but it's growing on me. Don't know if I'd ever use it as a phone replacement 24/7, as worried I'd crack the screen, and still too big if going on a night out really....

However, as a PDA replacement, seems to do lots. Shame the camera isn't 1MP or something, but can't have everything....cos then the camera would be semi-useful.

Thumbs up

I think the phone is great. There is an office package you can buy for it that allows you to edit excel & word files.

I found the best forum to be www.Esato.com which covers all Sony Ericcson phones. Software wise I tend to use www.handango.com.

Spotted a thing that looked like a Palm and a phone in the Orange Shop, anyone know anything about that?

Had mine for three months and love it.

Use it as everyday phone, message centre, email, diary, contact management, gameboy, MP3 player, etc, etc etc

UPDATE

For anyone who's interested, Sony have now released details of the P900 replacement, the P910. Big review here:
http://www.mobile-review.com/review/...-p910-en.shtml

It's frankly almost identical (hence not the P1000), but the main differences are;

Thumb keyboard on the reverse of the flip
Duo Pro capability - up to 1GB of memory storage
Improved screen with no cost to battery life

Apparently now it will be able to handle GPS

The biggest downside - camera is not upgraded

Let's see if I get one in October...

Considering this is their top end camera, they should really be putting a decent camera in it. Saying that, even if you did have 2 or 3MP with such a small lens, I doubt the quality of the pictures would be great anyway.....
