Default Wildlife Question

I've got 2 ponds in my back garden. There are quite a few frogs frequent them, they've left loads of frog spawn about.

I have a 2 year old child, and obviously ponds and small kids don't go together. So I want to fill the ponds in, but I don't wish to kill the frogs. I have heard they are getting rarer and rarer, so I could do with some idea's on how to get rid of them, but not kill them.

Are there any organisations that would come and get them and move them to a suitable habitat??

Cheers,

Andy.

Your local primary school will more than likely have a nature pond, where they can spend the rest of their days. Good bit of education for the kids too.

Or you could put a wire mesh and timber frame over them.. which I was I have done.. my daughter now 3 could walk on it.. and not get wet.. too heavy for her to lift off etc.. and the wildlife can still access it as it is on rocks etc.. so they can get under.

That's a good idea. I like the ponds, look nice in the garden, but our lass and her parents hate them. This may be due to the fear of the little 'un falling in, maybe not, but if that possibilty was removed, they'd have no complaints.

Cheers.

I had 2 ponds built, both measure approximately 40 square feet and 5ft deep with a bridge through the middle and my daughter never came to any grief. She loved feeding the fish and watching the wildlife.

She was told it was out of bounds at an early age unless accompanied and she listened so I guess it's up to you but I wouldn't remove your pond but maybe net it.

Not really, I'd lose about half my grassed area. The garden's not that big to start with.

Cheers,

Andy.

Get some 2inch by 2inch bits of wood and a reel of the small squared stiff netting and you are sorted.

Build it sturdy. My old neighbours had a Koi pond in their garden, for which they built a timber frame with thick-ish semi rigid plastic mesh (clematis net?) over the top. The mesh was about 10 inches above the surface of the water and was to keep cats/herons from getting the fish.

They kept moaning that the fish were disappearing, and we wondered how the Koi were appearing on our patio every other morning.

One day, i was looking out of an upstairs window and noticed our cat sitting by the pond. It got up and slowly walked out across the netting, which sagged down under the cats weight until it was about an inch off the surface. Then it sat there until a fish swam past underneath and hooked it out with a paw. Fish in mouth, it walked back off the netting which sprung back up again to normal height.

The perfect crime! Lucky for the cat it never got rumbled!

Don't fill them in. Habitats for wildlife need to be preserved. Put some of that green plastic covered wire fencing around them.
