you get a landline *free* with ntl, so that might be an option if you want cable tv. i have one from ntl but have never bothered to plug a 'phone into it. (because work pay for my home broadband but require a BT line)

I'm just wondering if I need a second line at all. It was going to be a business line but couldnt I just sort out a freephone number that feeds into the existing home number but displays on the phone handset where its been routed from, ie the freephone number? That way I could distinguish a business / personal caller ???

AFAIK there are only 2 outfits providing landlines to domestic residences - BT and NTL/Telewest. Could be wrong but that's how it is round here. No-one is gonna sell you a BT product cheaper than BT, cos they have to buy it from BT in the first place. i recently discovered that the ISP we use at work, which relies on BT infrastructure, is now significantly more expensive than going direct to BT.

Use BTs network to your house but can offer better pricing.
