Default Computer Crime - MY side

Ever wonder what happens to the hard drives of convicted criminals after the court cases are finished with and the computer equipment forfeited? Obviously, when indecent images of children are involved, we can't just throw the drive in the bin - we have to destroy the platters so the evidence is irretrievable.

So, I decided to take some photos to show various ways of trashing your hard disks

Here's an example of a hard disk with the cover removed.

You can try and scribble out the information with a marker pen

Or if you make a mistake you can Tip-Ex out the error

You could try some glue?

Or score the surface with a brodger

You could take a file to the platters

Or you could try and point out the errors with a red marker pen like teacher

And here's one we took my mistake, but looks quite cool IMHO

LOL! That's brilliant, is it spinning while you do that? How about a bit of "hard disk pottery", just put a blob of clay on it and you are away!

Or do what they do at my missus' work.....wipe them, and then throw them in the incinerator

I think you should sell the pile as modern art. A lot better than the turgid shîte that's been on TV recently like them bleedin' sheds

Some of the effects with the spirals on the disks are so cool

Love the effects on the last three pics

Still plenty of information on those. Had a bloke bring in a disk once who'd used a tin opener to take the top off because he thought he could "give it a spin" managed to get most - if not all - of the information back

Scrap yard magnets are supposed to work pretty well.

This is just the beginning

We have a contract with a local incinerator. We get to throw them in ourselves

It would take a fair bit of money to even begin to retrieve the data from one of these platters, but I know where you're coming from Jack.

Nice pictures, reminds me to dig out my old 80mb drives and have a play am sure it would wind up the boss if I said I was 'fixing it'

One wishes you could also throw the, still living, pedo scum into the incinerators too

Question

So what happens when they apeal their conviction and you no longer have any evidence?

Thumbs up

Keep up the good work, it must be harrowing enough for the people who have to look through the filth with a view to proscetucting(sp) these scum, not as harrowing as for the victims mind.

One job I've had a hand in this week had over 70,000 indecent images on the disk. In addition, over 5,000 indecent videos.

All of children.

Unhappy

It does make you sick.

Did anyone see the report on Sky News where a Russian child pornographer was arrested by the Russian police? He was only going to get about 6 months even though he was responisble for the abuse of the children and the decimination of the images.

The arresting officer gave him a good kicking and said that the inmates in the prison where he was going will do the same every day.

It's an interesting question John and one I wouldn't mind the answer to. Not sure if we'll get it on a public BBS.

My guess would be that if they appeal the physical disk isn't needed, it's been proved beyond doubt that the data was on the disks.

What happens if a bank robber appeals and the bank has a new safe?

just curious more than anything else, as it's bound to happen. I would imagine with most cases the evidence for normal convictions like a robery would be made up of forensics from items kept on file? But these convictions are based on electronic data which is slightly diferent.

The suspects' hard disks are backed up onto DVD at the time of the imaging, and archived.
