I think you have to pay vat at 17%. Also think you only pay on goods over £18 not worth collecting other wise. We buy DVDs and only pay the price quoted, slipped up once and bought a trilogy box set and got stung.

Sometimes you get away with it but I got stung for £35 on stuff from Japan - £20 odd duties and Parcel Force added around £13 (cos it was over £18 and sent EPS something to do with covering there admin at customs?) the item was around £130 and marked as a gift but had the full price on for insurance.

Usually you pay VAT at the going rate, plus duty at a rate which varies depending on the nature of the item. My guess is that duty on lights would probably be in the 2 - 5% range.

You also get charged for having them open the package and calculate the cost of the tax and duty, usually 10 - 15 quid.

On top of this the cost of postage is included in the cost of the item for these calculations, so you pay tax and duty on the postage cost.

At a guess you will probably pay 22% on the cost of the lights and postage. Lots of unknowns in there but a wild ballpark figure of £50 all in.

risk marking them gift value under 50$ and you will probably be get away with it, but be f*cked should they get damaged and need to claim
