FAO of Carp Anglers...
have any of you fished at Selby 3 Lakes in North Yorkshire and if so was it good?
Finally got a pass from the Mrs to go and see a mate I haven't seen in over a year for a long weekend to spend fishing, getting very drunk and watching the footie final
Thing is he has moved to Yorkshire (near Leeds) and Selby 3 Lakes seems the biggest carp fishery that allows night fishing but neither of us know anything about it so want to try and find out what people think of it. Bit of a long shot asking on here I know but I know there are a few other scooby owning carp anglers on here
P.S. no anti fishing comments wanted, if they are made I will ask the mods to delete them as this post is not an invite to debate the ethics of angling
TIA for any helpful replies

Because trout is expensive, perch are a pain in the ar$e and pike are bloody dangerous and will have your arm off Carp fight like a train pulling away at full power once hooked and it takes ages to catch one so allows for plenty of beer comsumption between fish

carp fishing is too scientific these days, stephen hawkins would struggle to hook one, might be a giggle watching him try to land one though
give me a live bait for pike any day of the week, when that bung starts twitching you just know that something below is making your bait nervous

No live baiting!
Spinner or lure is much more fun, specially when it goes tight and Mr Pikeys on the end thrashing for his life, and the ****** had better snap my 10lb line (haha) cuz if he don't I'll knock the 'im on the head and eat him!

LMFAO @ MJ - cruel but fair
TBH I would love to go Pike fising but couldn't justify the cost of all the new kit with all the carp stuff I have. I once caught a baby pike (jack) and thought I had hooked the bottom of the river until all of a sudden it shot off up river like a power boat Thought it was huge until I got it to the bank to see it was only a baby (2lb at the most) all teeth showing and thinking how the hell am I getting my hook back - it had swallowed it. Luckily it thrashed about so much it dislodged the hook, spat it out and swam off without me having to touch it If thats how a couple of pound baby pike fights, a 30lb monster must snap your arms off!!

B2z if you want to go pike fishing your all ready set up.
A good carp rod is more than fine, I use a carp rod for the pike.
Use your reel, change the spool for a 10lb line min, get a wire traces with loores or spinners and it's all fun. Don't have the drag set too low cuz he'll take you into the weeds and snag yer.

AB your having a laugh, I use far stronger line than that for carp and its not enough for pike, plus a 3lb test curve carp rod would not survive an adult pike!
The above jack I caught was on a carp rod and caught on a river and it fought very heavily. For pike fishing you need a very strong rod, especially if its on a river.

A true pike angler would never kill a pike, never mind eat one. The pike lads up here would bury you for that.

I'm a 'land lubber' thanks all the same ajm, boats are not for me, like to have my feet firmly planted on the bank of the lake with a tinny in each hand

They chop up into convenient steaks too!

agree, is a tadge "cruel", but the buzz you get when the bung slopes off under the water soon outweighs any feelings of guilt you may have had.
Also like lure fishing for pike - IMHO, the most enjoyable way is on a summers evening with top water popper lures, when the pike takes all hell breaks lose on the water, problem is, because of the way water bends light, the pike miss the lure more often than not
sorry bz2z, this is your carp thread
BTW, caught my biggest ever pike the other week - it was 1 ft longer than my 2ft landing net I'd love to post a picture, but the missus made a complete and utter ***** of that with her ***** camera - dont worry though chaps, I flogged her soundly with a large rod rest

They havent got massive teeth! Their teeth are like little needles pointing diagonally backwards with bigger teeth at the back.
They arn't outragously strong either, carp fight better than pike (IM expirience).

If you are into your Carp fishing but like 10-20lb fish regularly rather than a whopping 30lb Carp every week or so i would recommend the first lake on your right ('Kingfisher' i think??) at the Woodlands complex in Carlton Minniot, near Thirsk. In summer this place is almost a fish a cast with Carp if you know what you are doing and there is loads between 10-15lb, with the average being about 6-8lb or so. Although there was a 29lb Carp landed there not so long ago and i would believe that there may be some other very, very big stuff lurking in there as well if you are patient.
Its only around £7 a day to fish as well. Hpwever there are restrictions to baits etc and im not totally sure if night fishing is allowed. However, if you do decide to go there i would recommend about 8-10lb line on pretty strong gear (a Avon style rod 1.5-1.75lb test curve will be good) or a full on carp rod with a large chunk of meat on the end. Doesnt really seem to matter if its fished with a waggler or legered as they will just take it regardless. Great fun. Definately worth a visit sometime.

It's a pity that trout fishing is so expensive in your region, but that's probably because they're stockies and have to be paid for.
I fly-fish mostly for trout & salmon, but I believe employing this method for pike is quite successful. I would imagine a decent pike on a fly rod would be an "interesting" experience? A decent 8 weight outfit should do fine.

I know you said helpful, but ...
They are so easy, why do you need a rod
PS: as an aside: carp anglers over here sometimes catch "koi". They apparently are put into these fishing ponds because they are not the highest grade/over-population etc...)
