racism or bigotry?

Ok this is for no reason apart from a bit of intrest and me thinking a bit too much! but could wind up comments between Scots, English etc and vice versa legally be classed as racist or not? I.E. are the English Scottish Welsh etc legally different races?
Cheers all

I don't see why its stupid it is just out of interest? lots of people on other threads are calling each other racist re comments about football etc and it just got me thinking as to weather its 'legally' the case thats all? I'm not about to start taking people to court over it!!

It's a good Question.
I've lived in Scotland for 15 years and have had strangers come up to me (2 in total) and scream in my face "**** of home you English ****". Now If I were black and had the "equivalent" it would be racist - however as I'm white it would probably be treated by the police in Scotland as a polite suggestion from a worried citizen.
Banter is one thing - the above is racist - Even if "English" isn't a race - Surely ?
BTW This is very much the exception - Most sweaty socks are actually quite nice

Racism Discrimination or prejudice based on race
Race A group of people united or classified together on the basis of common history, nationality, or geographic distribution: the German race
So yes, by definition - that is racist.

I have a Scots mate and today I think he is a kunt and will tell him so......... he's also giving me a massive amount of stick. I've insulted his family, his history, his country............................ and it means nothing! At the end of the day he is a top lad but it's just banter and I wouldn't have it any other way!

lmao @ jasey!
Yes STI I think thats exactly the point if its someone you know well and they understand the context the comments are made in then no harm but if its someone you don't know then you dont really know if the comments are jibes or blatant insults.

I used to work with a few scots - and the best bit about seeing the national football team lose was winding them up about it.
A couple of good mates are scottish, and it's all just friendly banter to me - but screaming at a complete stranger "go home you english c**t" is out of order.

Like most things it's all about context. If you are a lone Scot in a sea of English to$$ers all winding you up constantly about your ****e football team and ugly women then it could be considered racist abuse - if it's just a load of nerds exchanging un-pleasantries on the web - well that just ScoobyNet
.
ps the Words "Scot" and "English to$$ers" can be inter-changed to any combination
eg.
"Welsh tw@t" and "Sheep"

After seeing the posts from the Scots and Welsh on the football I'd firmly say it shows more than a hint of hatred to the English, probably brought on by a strong feeling of inferiority, but nonetheless clearly expressed.

Spoon I doubt it's inferiority, as a Scots I feel very good about myself and my nation, I'm proud to be a Scot and when abroad I always feel that people love the Scots and Scotland. I think perhaps the anti-English sentiment on SN is more football related than anything else. After all it only seems to come out during WC and Euro time. For what it's worth I find it hard to believe that based on a few posts people actually think every Scot is a biggoted gimp, I have more hatred for the local Scottish neds than I'll ever have for any one nation. You just have too look at old firm games to see that Scots hate each other more than anything and religion has just as big a part to play as nationality.

What it does do though without a doubt, is give a few (in their minds) an excuse to retaliate in whatever way they may see fit.

Agree mostly with spoon's comments. However, do agree with Jye's sensible logic.
As a Scot I dont hate the other cultures (except americans cause I work for them
).
It's quite insulting reading some of the sweeping generalisations posted. Irrelevant if your black/white/english/welsh/american/alien...etc if you insult me I'd pan your face in if I thought you meant it.
The moronic ned culture is how I think alot of this age old bitterness still survives.
Anyway, I'm fix my japanese car, using english part supplier, delivered by a scots courier company
