M25 in Essex - Speed Cameras.....
About 10 miles past the Dartford tunnel there are *some* *things* that resemble cameras on this stretch of motorway. They are on the left side on the verge beside the hard shoulder.
They are about 4 feet in height. They face in the direction in which the traffic is heading (they would see your rear). They are grey in colour. They are rectangular, about 2 feet in width and 8 inches in height (the actual camera bit). If you look back at them once passed you notice there are actually 3 partitions so to speak, each with a lens inside. They seem to be one partition/lens for each lane. About 100 metres past the camera there are the markers on the road (like after a Truvelo). They are staggered in distance from the camera in each lane.
Does anybody know what I am on about?? Please no speculation as I was doing 71mph though these so just want fact....not "it might be's".
Thanks all.

Mmmm. My local bit of the M25! From the distance you describe from the tunnel they must be between J28 & J29? I used the section from the tunnel to J29 coming home from Goodwood on Sat. and my Origin said nothing, so if they are speed cameras they must be further on toward J28.
If they are only 4ft I doubt if they are cameras that rely on road markings, the angle would be too small for the graduations?
Truvelos face you and are triggered by sensors in the road.

The lines may be like them on the Gatso then. About 30 feet of them, a longer one then a load of smaller ones, then a longer one and so on.
They are bizarre, they definately point at each individual lane and the road markings are laid out in the staggered manner which worries me. Only ever seen them there. I'd love to know what they are.

Number plate recognition system - checking for valid tax maybe? Sounds a bit odd. though. I travel that stretch get a lot - I'll have a look this week. I've seen the police using a system similar to what you've described in Surrey. The difference was that the equipment was mounted in a van and they were stopping people about half a mile down the road in a layby. Not so easy to do on the motorway though.

They're too low and dinky (gay word) for that I think. Those cameras to which you refer generally are high up on posts.
I got flashed in France yesterday to, will I get anything?? 88mph on a 70mph road.

I know what you are referring too and am sure they are traffic monitoring equipment. I have done 'silly' speeds past these before. There is one on Castle Hill North bound on the A21 at Tonbridge. Its single carriage way and still has 3 individual blinkered lenses. Has been there for years, is too low for a speed camera, doesn't point at the lanes as such but directly parallel to the road (although the lenses could be angled I know but they would be blocked by the blinkers/partitions between them) and there are no road markings at all.
They do not appear on any site as a particular type of speed camera, not that I have seen anyway.

You'll get extadited to France on the understanding that the mandatory death sentance is reduced to life on Devils Island!

Being near the Dartford bridge that would indeed make sense. It seems to always be foggy around there....maybe its to do with the water?? lol.
Nice one, I'm less concerned now.
