No claims protection

When renewing your insurance, is it worth paying the extra for protected no claims discount when you have over 10 years of no claims?
I am under the impression that when you make a fault claim your no claims drops by 2 years. so if you have many years of accident free driving, there won't really be an impact on your renewal (you just claim 2 years less NCD).
BTW, I am going through a non-fault claim at the mo.
Is this correct or have I misread some information?

You've misread it.
Most insurance companies accept up to 6 years no claims discount ( some only 5) so if you've had 20 years without a claim, this will still only count as 6 years NCD.
I think most companies reduce your no claims to 3 years after a single fault claim.

I have no claims protection and I was very glad of it in the past.
you still have a claim against you and the premium will increase, but your NCD is in tact so you dont lose out on both fronts.
I will always take out protection and indeed if you go with Liv/Vic I believe its integral to the policy automatically. But I could be wrong about this.
IMO its a small price to pay for extra security

Direct line if you have a fault claim you lose 2 years.
Once you get to 5 or 6 years ncd you cant get any more so even if you have 30 years of no accidents, make a fault claim and you could be back down to 3 years ncd.
If you're a safe driver and dont use tha car much protecting your ncd may not be worth it.

A good example of a no blame claim would be if someone damages your car while it is parked, there are no witnesses, and the hit-and-run driver can't be traced. Let's say there is £2000 of damage to your car. You're clearly not to blame for the damage but make a claim to get the damage sorted. You will lose a couple of years' NCD if you don't have a protected NCD. If you were on full NCD (typically 60%) you would drop back to 40% NCD.
