Question Ok, try this one - bet you don't know!

I have a leisure battery that I am trying to revive by charging and then connecting a car headlight across it to give it a few deep cycles - should get it back into some condition for Summer (when it arrives)

Now, its a 60Amp battery and I want to work out how long the headlamp should stay alight for ............. hence the question:-

Does anyone know what the Wattage was of a headlamp from a Morris Minor - high beam and dip?

This will allow me to see whether the battery is getting fully charged or not

Cheers

Pete

Doesn't it say on the bulb?

p.s. let me guess.... the battery has been sitting in your garage since circa 1970?

Presuming it's Sealed beam light bulbs (relefctor is the bulb) it should be:

45watts on dipped 60watts on high

If they are halogen (bulb is seperate to the reflector) its 55watts on dipped and 60watts on high

Har Har!!

The headlamp is a sealed unit so doesn't have a bulb as such!

Its marked on the outside as 15W/5W - which to my mind is rubbish! Thats not much better than a candle!

Mind you - Subaru headlights aren't much better than a candle either!

Forgive Mr Lewis, but are you deep cycling a lead acid battery??

I was under the impression deep cyling lead acid batteries detriorates their performance....not getting confused with Nikel Cadmium batteries are you???

Question

Pete: if it's sealed beam, it'll be a 60W.
If it's a BPF bub, my bets would be on 48W.

AliB: LEISURE battery...............read the post m8, they benefit from deep cycling, I have one in my caravan and it does too.

I thought the only way to improve a lead acid by discharging is by PULSE discharging it...and a bulb isn't going do that.

you mean 60 amp/hour?

15 w lamp.

15w/12v=1.5A

battery does 60A for 1 hour. ( it never will in a month of sundays, but they have to rate them somehow )

60A/1.5A=40.

so according to mj's theory of elastictrickery it should last 40 hours.

best bet is to take it to a local garage or battery supplier, they will have a piece of kit that does the same thing in about 4 seconds.

Spanner across the terminals when it's fully charged then.

I think that PSL rates his posts by the number of replies he gets, the more rubbishy the contents of the post the better!

Maybe rocket scientists are not expected to know how to use a multimeter!

What, you've got a tongue that will reach from one terminal of a lead acid battery to the other?

Bet you're in demand by the ladies? Can you breathe through your ears too?:

Leisure battery or not it's still a lead acid jobbie and they don't like being deep discharged. You will only cause it to detirorate by doing so.

Leisure batteries are designed to be able to withstand a deep discharge and subsequent recharge better a normal car battery but cycling it as you suggest will not improve it, quite the opposite in fact. The best way to get it up to full capcity is to trickle charge it for a few days.

The battery chemistry is more or less the same. A car battery has to be able to provide a very large dose of current over a short period of time (i.e. when you start your car up). Once the car is running the battery's work is over. The alternator will be providing power to the vehicles electircal systems and charging the battery back up.

Where as a leisure battery is designed to provide a constant steady flow of current over a long period of time. Not the one big hit that a car battery has to do. That's the only real difference.
