Default Summer Holiday - Fancy something a bit different

Hello guys, I am new to post on the board but have been reading SN for a year or two.

Now I could do with some help. I have the usual summer holiday options
1 Week on the p1ss with the lads
2 Lazy week at home
3 Something different

I am a bit fed up with 'lads' holidays and would really like to do something completely different. I need to get away from the stress of my job for a couple of weeks. So far I have

Back pack around france/spain/italy

Go to some where like iceland and travel back through sweden etc

and that is the list so far!!!

So please give me some ideas!!!

By myself have no g/f at the moment and want to do something out of the ordinary, lively is good as I like a drink etc but certainly haven't got a problem with quiet.

Do you want hot weather or are you prepared to take whatever is thrown at you? Are you happy to rough it? (I guess that your first post gives some clues).

Something that I did about 20 years ago was spent a week working on the Loch Ness Project. I spent a week camping by the Loch and working with biologists from Universities such as Manchester and London carrying out sonar surveys of the Loch and trawling the bottom of the Loch to find out what lived on the bed of the Loch.

Since then I've seen documentaries on Discovery Channel saying that they've commisioned research on Loch Ness and have discovered all these unusual things about the habitat, and each time I see them I think, "****. We found this at least 15 years before you made this programme!".

A web search for "Loch Ness Project" and "Adrian Shine" might get you in the right direction (should this be of interest). There were female biologists in the team when I did the work.

I have been on UK canal holidays for the last couple of years, dead easy to chill, just take copious amounts of lager, weed, and fishing tackle.

If you like weed and booze you have cracked it, if your into fishing then bonus.

...depends on the marital stauts, with this type of holiday, ******** is not a consideration, unless you take "it" with you - even then, she will be so knackered after doing all the locks you can forget it .

Give Iceland a try. You could have a week or so doing the usual tourist stuff, blue lagoon, Geysir, Gullafoss/Dettifoss. Also Reykjavik is renowed for having a great club scene and Icelandic women are said to be above on the beauty stakes. You could also spend a week doing some hiking or touring by 4WD. Outside Reykjavik there is a very low population density, so you can get away from it all very easily.

Go to see a round of the WRC abroad, that's what I do for my hols anyway You get to spend the first few days doing a bit of local sightseeing then, during the rally you get to watch state of the art machinery driven at ludicrous speeds on frighteningly narrow mountain roads by the top drivers in the world, can't beat it...

Rally Finland August 6 - 8
Deutschland Rally August 20 - 22
Japan September 3 - 5
Wales Rally GB September 17 - 19
Rallye d'Italia October 1 - 3
Tour of Corsica October 15-17
Catalonia Rally October 29-31
Rally Australia November 12 - 14

Click here for current Iceland weather forecast

I went in early June a few years back. It was mostly sunny that week, only a little rain. Daytime temperatures were about 15-20 deg C. It will be cooler in the highlands if you fancy some extreme 4WD action (you will never more big 4x4's with extreme off road suspension than in Iceland, and they need it !!)

Think you mentioned this in your post, but a drive down through Germany (autobahn) to Switzerland and Italy would be recommended, treat your Subaru to the Alps, mate. Not that far, different world.
