Default Fizzy Drinks Question

And before some over zealous mod moves this to Muupet, I'd like a sensible answer - How do they put fizzy drinks into bottles? Do they put the fizz in the drink first and then try to bottle it (which would be messy) or do they put the drink in the bottle and then put the fizz in (which would be time consuming).

Also, how is mineral water 'naturally' sparkling? I've never seen a fizzy stream.

Cheers!

Question

And I've always wondered why putting a bit of fizz on still water makes it taste so different!

The water is Natural - the sparkle is added.

The drink is fizzy but probably just bottled under pressure where the gas is kept 'dormant'. Hence why when you shake the bottle while it's still sealed, it's doesn't fizz like mad.

I'm not sure which way round they do it, but 2 things occur. First is that having seen one working, bottle filling machines work incredibly fast - blur of empty bottles in blur of filled bottles out type fast, so time consuming it is not, and second, the fizz only comes out of the drink when the pressure is lowered by opening it, so I'd guess they are filled under pressure to stop the fizz coming out - hence why the plastic bottles of juice are soild until you open them.

Fiz the drink then fill and seal in a pressurised environment so the fizz doesn't escape.

Pure water is chemically neutral (neither acid nor alkali). The fizz comes from adding carbon dioxide. Carbon Dioxide plus water make Carbonic Acid (I think. O level chemistry was a long time ago )- which is a mild acid. Fizzy water is chemically different from pure still water, hence the different taste.

You obviously aren't old enough to remember Sodastream then?

See what I'm on about here. They used to be mega popular in the late seventies.

Why does the fizz make you burp? If the fizz travelled in the opposite direction and wasn't affected by gravity, would it make you trump instead?

The classic challenge of making it as fizzy as possible without needing a mop to wipe up the carnage when it goes pop

its the bodys way of removing un-wanted gas from your stomach, gases produced through the process of digestion come out the other end...

did anyone ever try making fizzy milk in a sodastream - now that was messy - I reached the conclusion at an early age that CO2 does not like to dissolve in milk - move the handle on the sodastream to release the bottle, cue the coming together of 1/2 pint of flat milk and 8 BAR , the tube on the sodastream turns into a milk bazooka

PMSL @ MJ

Remember sodasteam, fecking sweet. Actually, whenever my dad used to use the thing you had to either straight to the bathroom to clean your teeth or book a trip to dentist to remove knackered teeth!!

Marvolous (sp), enduring image isn't it?, jumpers for goalposts...............
