I'm sure the hunting lot won't be bothered, a kill is a kill to them.

Are you a hunt saboteur? Your vitriolic response, made at the expense of a tragic accident, is typical of a hunt saboteur's misplaced moral superiority.

It's nothing to do with the 'hunting' fraternity that hunt foxes with hounds!! These were hunters out at night with guns

Yes but if fox hunting is banned, more farmers will be out at night shooting the foxes as vermin.

It was a tragic accident, the sort of thing that will happen from time to time in a farming community. A child got killed recently in my area through a tractor mishap, but it wasn't publicised massively as it was a "normal" accident.

I reckon we should ban hunting by tractors, then.

No, no, you've got it wrong. They were hunting tractors using foxes. Well, kids, actually. The kids were the only ones who could fit the fox-saddles.**

**technically, this is incorrect - the grooms were the ones who fitted the saddles, but the kids were the only ones who could fit *on* the saddles. Hope this clears up the misunderstanding.

A gamekeeper friend of mine knows someone who actually shot and killed his own father whilst out shooting when he tripped and fell with a loaded shotgun.

They heartless b*stards nicknamed the poor guy "Baghdad"!

Seriously though, this is a terrible tragedy not just for the poor kid's family but also whoever pulled the trigger because they will have to live with that for the rest of their life. The media always pounce on shooting sports, but shooting is actually a very safe sport. However, as someone already said, accidents sadly do happen.

That's what worries me about these farmer types, they can get a shotgun licence to control vermin, but most of them have bugger all idea how to handle a firearm safetly, and yet those who used to fire handguns and rifles on ranges under very strict conditions were banned from doing so. Of course this stopped all the criminal element from getting their hands on guns so nobody gets shot with handguns anymore

Mr Hockings said "lamping" was the use of a strong light to transfix prey so it could be shot.
So how do you mistake a 13 year old boy for a fox in the beam of a powerful torch? I bet they were pi$$ed up.

Has New Labour vowed to ban hunting with guns yet? That's their usual knee jerk response to incidents like this.

I find it hard to believe someone would shoot at a rustling bush without identifying the quarry, and as you say its unlikely that they visually mistook the kid for a fox.

Unless the person responsible is completely clueless I would imagine the real reason is either accidental discharge or not checking for a clear backdrop before taking the shot, i.e. he fired at something that was between him and the kid without being able to see the kid.

That will depend on how we react to the press I would imagine. If Tony thinks for one minute that the media will do a hatchet job on the shooter and that the public will believe it then he will be straight on the bandwagon, you can be sure of that!

Thing is if the majority of farmers have shotguns etc why do we need to have hunts to "control the fox population"?? are all farmers habitual bad shots ???

The farmers need shotguns to kill the rabbits because, for some reason , there aren't enough foxes around to keep the rabbit numbers down.
