Taking the girlfriend to Scotland for a week cuz she never been b4. Any recommendations on places to go and see.
Do you think it will be hard to find B&B's as we travel round and how much should I expect to be paying?

I think it really depends what sorts of things you enjoy. We spent our honeymoon there last year and split our time between Edinburgh (fun city and good nightlife/ restaurants) and Loch Earn - very pretty and lots of outdoor walks.

Wouldn't have thought you'd havfe too much trouble booking somewhere - B&Bs were around £20 pppn IIR. It's easy enough to avoid Edinburgh city centre and get a cheaper B&B on the outskirts - the bus service was excellent and not too pricey.

People seem to forget that almost half the length of Britain is Scotland. It's a bloody long way up to JoG and there are no motorways within several hundred miles of it either

If you're going to Fort William, you HAVE to take a day over in Skye. On the right day, the scenery is astonishing. Clearly, it's rubbish if there's rain tipping down!

I drove from Skye back to FW at around 6pm this time last year - the colours of the setting sun will live with me for a long time.

Something else to consider if you're outdoor types is a visit to Glentress MTB centre in the Borders - about an hour's drive from Edinburgh. Bikes available for hire, all-weather trails ... sorted.

Run up the A82 past lock Lomond, up to Fort William then Arisaig, Back of Keppoch (true!), Mallaig nip over to skye (a must)

If you want to see Loch Ness then Fort Augustus is at the bottom end. Only a little place but nice enough!

It will take you AGES to get to JoG. Oban is a kind of nice place to go too - not what I was expecting! Nice boat trips to see Seal colonies as well.

Oh - and in Fort William - look out for the hot pork sarnie shop in the high street. Wonderful if you're not Jewish. Or Muslim.

As a Scot I'd say the west coast is the place to go.

For the best scenery go from Glasgow up the A82 past Loch Lomond, turning off at Tarbet, through Arrochar, up the rest and be thankful to Inverary. Turn Left at Inverary and head for Oban.

From Oban head for Fort William (over to Skye) and then up the coastal routes to Gairloch and Ullapool.

Head from Ullapool to Inverness and then run down the lochside. From the south of loch ness head accross to the a9 and down to perth.

You can then go back via Glasgow or Edinburgh.

The north east is nice, but not as scenic.

Off to Skye this weekend (fingers crossed for the weather). Got to be the West Coast for scenery and roads.

You'll not go wrong in Glasgow or Edinburgh if you stick to the city centres.

If you can't get over to Skye, I'd spend some time around Wester Ross. Scenery is stunning, especially Torridon.

If you contact Visit Scotland they can advise you on things to do and book accomodation for you virtually anywhere in Scotland.

We stayed a night on the outskirts of Edinburgh for £35pppn in August - I understood it was the going rate.

Apparently there's a central no. for Scottish Tourist/Hotel Board, and you tell them where you are and they give you all the B&Bs nearby. Sounded really organised. We didn't use them as we had found one already. I can't tell you the number, forgotten, but perhaps someone here or Google will reveal it.

Jesus thats pretty much what me and my mate did back in warm and sunny January.
From Ullapool went to Thurso then John O'groats before heading down to Inverness, Perth and Edinburgh. Great fun

Just to add we did this in a knackered Renault 5, the wipers bust after 30 miles and the car scrapped shortly after getting back

Take a route up the West coast to Oban, cross to Craignue on Mull and head on up to Tobermorey. Spend a day or two looking around the Island, maybe a trip to Staffa & the Giant's Causeway, or over to Iona. Imagine the rally boys going at full chat over those roads in rally scoobs Tour of Mull

Next take the ferry from Tobermorey across to Ardnamurchan and travel on up to Mallaig (detour to Tioram Castle recommended, quality accommodation nearby if you like peace and quiet here) to Mallaig. Some great seafood to be had in Mallaig, don't let the French and Spanish eat it all! Cross over to Armadale on Skye, go and take a look at the Black Cuillins if the weather is good, Britains most spectacular mountains. Take the bridge back to the mainland then head north and take a look at Torridon via a detour to Applecross over Britains highest mountain road. Travel south to Fort William past Eileen Donan (the castle in the film Highlander) and then onwards through Glencoe and south again.

Ah memories, all this is making me homesick for the UK....

Dont miss out on Dumfries & Galloway, Glentrool etc is really stunning and a must to visit and drive through on your way up north, also Ayrshire (Burns country ) and the Isle of Arran (one of the most romantic and magical places on the west coast), spesh if your thinking of brownie points with the missus (nudge nudge )

Portree is on Skye. You can see how far it is from Inverness.
