Default stuff to do in london

ok so some old friends are coming over from the states and ive been nominated to show them around england. first stop london apparently.

ive been to london a few times but never did the tourist thing there yet. what should we visit, and do u have to book beforehand for those things, or do u just turn up?

im thinking:
london eye
tower of london
big ben
that pepsi place with the video arcades

any others?

Go here and drink lots:

Fabulous day out - but don't plan anything too early for the next morning! You definitiely get the best tours on Saturday afternoons - and remember - the people pouring all the samples are on minimum wage and can easily be persuaded to 'slip' a little!

London eye - yes if the weather looks like being good.
Tower of London - definitely, if only for the crown jewels.
Big Ben you'll see from the eye, or as you walk towards it.
Avoid the Trocadero Arcade like the plague, along with Leicester Square.
I enjoy the National Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate, and the museums (V&A, Natural History, Science).
Covent Garden is OK if you are just wandering around. I suppose after that you can try Tussauds.
After the eye I'd walk upto Parliament Square, along Whitehall to Trafalgar Square, Down the Mall to Buck Palace, through Green Park, and take tea at the Ritz, if want to get real touristy.

Go to the London Eye, assuming the weather is reasonable, you'll see a fair bit!

Cross the bridge to Embankment, where there is lots of information on the bridge about the bits you can see.

Catch the Thames Ferry, it actually goes back to the London Eye, but this way you get a seat. Get a return ticket with stops to Greenwich.

This will allow you to get the ferry, go past The Tower of London, under Tower Bridge as well as have a commentray about the sites you are passing.

Get some lunch in Greenwich and see where GMT is mesaured from.

Get the Ferry back to The Tower for a walk about and see the crown jewels.

You can then head up to the West End from Embankment, as you can go through Charing Cross, which takes you up to Trafalquer Square, feed the pigeons, then head up to Leicester Square (may be stop for a pint) then Piccadilly Circus (when it starts getting dark and all the lights are on), and may be take in the Trocadero if that's want you want.

Walk through China Town and maybe get dinner.

That should keep you busy for a day!!!! (And all in order so there's no doubling back, except on the ferry!!)

Here are a few:

1) Get mugged by illegal immigrants
2) Get stuck on the tube due to leaves on the line/security alert
3) Get smog induced respiratory disease
4) Get lost in miles of sprawling concrete
5) Get charged a fortune by Red Ken for sitting in your stationary car for hours at a time

Do them a favour and explain to them that London is not really paved with gold, neither is it quaint and quirky with cheerful pearly kings and cheeky cockneys round every corner, then take them to see the beautiful parts of England that havn't been ruined by years of under funding, over population and in-breeding!

Living in Portishead, you'd know all about in-breeding.

Don't bother - I've heard Northampton is way better than London....

Seriously :
Eye, Frog tours (amphibious vehicle), Mme Tussauds, Tower & Bridge, Champagne bar in NatWest tower, any decent musical (scrap the last two if they are from NYC of course)

As an alternative view, a mate of mine loves the funny little tours- the Jack the Ripper tour, the Ghosts tour, etc.

There's some mad pub beside St Pauls, something to do with haunts or ghosts, or summat. Didn't go in, but friend used the loo and came out giggling - it looked like a laugh to return to.

We quite liked the Tower Bridge tour.

Wink

TBH most Yanks would want to see

Buckingham Palace
Harrods
Trafalgar Square
Tussauds
Where Sherlock Holmes lived (NSS!)
And for some reason that crappy little souvenier shop near Lillywhites

As long as there's loads of tourists in the same area (preferably US) then they'll be happy

Good point 66 Blue - mustn't forget a good ruby. Can strongly recomend the authentic (i.e no korma or madras rubbish) Lahore kebab House on Umberstone Street off the Commercial Road. Best lamb karai in the business.

The Jack the Ripper walk is quite good, you end up in a featured pub too (although I bet you do on all of them!). Boat trips down the Thames are well worth it. A guided walk through Highgate Cemetary is ok as well. I hate being asked to do the tourist thing
