Lightbulb Speed kills.

If the government is so keen to stop speeding, why not introduce a penalty where anyone exceeding the speed limit by any amount has their car crushed? No points system, no excuses, no second chance. Maybe a couple of miles per hour tolerance.

I'm sure this would reduce speeds considerably. Why bother with speed cameras and revenue collecting bureaucracy when this idea is obviously going to be much more effective and efficient?

Why not go the whole hog and crush the driver whilst still in the car then there is no doubt that he/she will never do it again!!!

It will also keep the population down

They aren't, it is that simple. Speeding isn't the issue, observation and driver training is, if you want to promote person choice on transportation. Labour do not support that philosophy, they want people to use public transport, hence the policy to fleece anybody expressing personal choice in transport to (maybe) invest in public transport as give it another 10 years or so and you won't be able to:
a) afford to run a car
b) travel more than 50 miles a week
c) travel at more than 3mph and must have a guy in front carrying a red flag

So you'll HAVE to use public transport - but seeing as it has only got worse in the last 10 years, you had better hope you live within walking distance of anybody you want to see and that you can work from home!!

no they don't. labour want you to carry on using your car and enabling them to gather sh*tloads of revenue on petrol tax, road fund licence, speeding fines etc. the only trouble is that they can't actually come out and say that, so they pretend that they are trying to encourage people to use public transport.

Historically they have always been a public rather than private transport party. I don't think that has changed particularly, hence the hold placed on many of the major road projects when they first came in to power. It is just coincidental that they have found that speed cameras generate huge amounts of revenue whilst pi$$ing off those who go against the "choose public transport" ethos so it kind of works doubly well for them.

There is no evidence of big investment in public transport schemes under labour. Also, Labour got rid of the fuel tax escalator that ensured fuel tax rises exceeded infaltion (the Tories invented it).

So whilst New Labour may be theoretically committed to public transport, their policies do not bear this out.

The same is true of many other things New Labour as well. Big commitment to health and education as well when they got in, yet to see much happening there after 10 years either. Oh except for the scrapping of student grants (which would no doubt have seen wholesale riots if the Tories had done it). So nothing new then - 2 faced politicians at work again.

At least with Health & Education they did actually increase spending in these areas - it just didn't acheive the results they were hoping for, as the problems are more deep seated than just shortage of cash. So you can add incompenent to two faced...

Historically they do not like people to have the freedom of movement they get by owning a car, this goes against the idea of complete control of the population which is the great goal. But they are of course quite happy to accept the taxes we have to pay.

They say wonderful things about what they are going to do to provide good public transport which after 7+ years we are still waiting to see. In common of course with all those other great promises. As someone said, they throw money at some of the problems but their gross ineptitude in actually creating an improvement shows.
