New Watch advice - Zenith, Breitling or Tag.
Folks for my 30th in a few months I have decided to buy my self a nice expensive watch. I have narrowed it down to the following 3.
1) The Zenith
http://www.watchwindow.com/outlet/im...20480405_d.gif
2) The Breitling Crosswind 677
http://www.blitzwatches.co.uk/produc...?productid=436
3) The Tag Heuer Monaco
http://www.blitzwatches.co.uk/produc...?productid=323
The criteria is:-
1) Up to £1700ish
2) Must have a Chronograph
3) Would prefer date
4) Must retain some resell value or become a classic
5) Not look 'Chavish' or like a common fake - one likes some exclusivity.
Any way please let me know your views....
thanks Bing

First two look like gaudy baubles. I'd consider the third except that it's a Tag. Are you expecting to keep this for life, or just the next few years?
Can you add another 300 quid? I'd go for this IWC, WAY more exclusive...

Omega Railmaster?
http://www.omega.ch/omega/co_watch?I...ublineID=40179
They go for about £1400, not sure if they're available with date window though.
BTW, blitzwatches don't offer full warranty as they're grey importers so bear that in mind if you buy from them. Watches of Switzerland will (grudgingly) give discount if you pay cash or debit card, i negotiated £250 off my Speedmaster in the Cardiff branch. If you buy from an authorised dealer (like WOS) then you get the full warranty.

Out of the three, the Zenith every time.
The Tag is based on a classic and is highly unlikely to be a classic itself. The Breitling is a good watch, but the they don't 'do' anything for me.
Zenith are an excellent make and much more rare.
BUT I'm going with Brendan on this one - try to spend that little bit more and go for an IWC. All the best people 'av 'em (I bought an IWC Portuguese a few weeks ago )

Tag is the pick aesthetically speaking, but you would have to be mad to pay anything more than £20 for a Tag watch, because everybody is going to think that it is snide.
Have a look at www.primereplicas.com and spend the rest paying off your mortgage (if you have one), or if not, spend it on the missus.

of those 3 the first looks like its from a sunday mag special offer, the second is nice (brown strap not practical for everyday use as it wont always match your clothing- black leather is better), 3rd was nice first time round but is now just a remake by a company that has a different rep to that which it had when i tmade it first time ie....chavclocks!
the IWC is nice as shown above.....i'd avoid Omega, i have a seamaster but the commbo of Omega actually making a watch with 007 writen on it and sooooooo many fake seamasters around puts me off. it will be replaced soon.

It would be the Breitling for me as i have just purchased one myself.. went for the B2 - i ordered from blitz and they were very good.. it did take 25 days thought to arrive, where some of the other brands of watch are availlable straight away. Looks great though.. they are big watches though..:-)

Go for the IWC, very nice watch. I would go along to your local Watches of Switzerland as if you are paying cash you can get that particular model for £2000. In fact most of the time WoS will chop 15% off for cash.

My only advice would be........
Dont buy any of the top 5 brands new, select a pre-owned model, not necessarily a pre-worn one as below.
Just SOLD ( subject to jewellers authenticity approval )
An unworn Rolex ExplorerII for £1600.00, lost £625.00 in the blink of an eye.
You have narrowed your choice down to three brands, out of those three brands I would buy the Breitling, but not the model you have chosen, but each to their own.
A couple of oddball sites to peruse.....I have purchased from both, the Chase-Durer site have some nice quality pilot orientated chrono's, with the £ strong against the $ these watches are cheap, but not nasty.
The Poljot site have some really high spec chrono's, made with excellent precision, dont be put off by the name, I see these watches as being the Russian equivalent of the Swiss Rolex.

Slight thread hijack here. IF i wanted to sell my 6 month old Omega Speedmaster moon watch, where would be the best place to try and sell it?
Do decent dealers do part exchange?
Just mulling something over really, might fancy a change if the money was right...

Iwan - Expect to get about £800 for it on ebay if its mint/box/papers etc
Decent dealer might give you bout £650/700 if its mint and you purchased something new for about £2k+ at same time...
Keep your eye on
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...928895350&rd=1
and
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...929752321&rd=1
Search on Ebay reveals loads of copies for sale now, prices for originals have fallen quite a bit the last few months.

TAG looks subtle in the photos but its like wearing a juke box on your wrist.
As an owner of an expensive watch bought for me as a present I personally wouldnt bother again. Although it is extremely accurate I could have bought another new v expensive watch for the amount it took to have mine refurbished after 10 years wear.
Get yourself down to Argos and swallow your pride.

Is that all it's worth?
Cheers for the info Nat21, i guess i could take a bit of a hit though if i was upgrading. I'll keep an eye on those 2 auctions (added to my watchlist ) and see what they make. I'm tempted go go for a Breitling Avenger Seawolf but i'm still not sure, it was either that or the Speedy before - and i went for the Speedy.
If the Speedy was water/shock proof then it'd be perfect and i'd be happy, i end up wearing the G-Shock a lot if i'm scared of damaging the Speedy...

Yeah, i can see your point. I probably could wear it every day (and usually do) but i like to look after my stuff. If i'm going fishing or mountain walking then id rather not drop a £1400 watch in a lake or smash it on a rock.

Its certainly shock proof, continuous vibration/shock was one of the tests NASA did to them.
I know the Hesalite crystal scratches very easily (and Yoza's just pointed it out too) but hopefully you already know you can just as easily polish scratches out with vigourous rubbing using Brasso,Toothpaste or if you want to use what the pro's do Jewellers Rouge. The Hesalite i heard is actually harder to smash than Saphire Crystal, it justs scratches easily.
I've worn Speedmasters for the last 6 or so years and they've taken a hell of a beating/knocking many times and never broken.
