Dawn French is about as funny as chronic food poisoning. Is there anyone out there who really thinks she is Britain's best comedian or is it comedienne (or comedichien even )?

Ronnie Barker off that list.
My own list would include (in no particular order):
Roy Chubby Brown
Peter Kay
Jack Dee
Tommy Cooper
Eric Morecambe
Ronnie Barker
Ben Elton (In his Man From Auntie days)
The Dangerous Brothers

Of the five, Ronnie Barker as not only is he funny, he's writes loads of funny stuff for other people over the years.
My favs are Jasper Carrott He was 6th so just missed out Far funnier than all in the top 5. Maybe he's too 'alternative' for the general pop idol watching public
The top five (in no particular order) SHOULD have been
Jasper Carrott
Eddie Izzard
Peter Kay
Rowan Atkinson
Punt & Dennis (yeah yeah, I know they're a double act but )

Well there's John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson who are streets ahead of any of that lot. All IMHO of course
PS. Tommy Cooper remains my own favourite!

Sorry but Tommy Cooper was the the greatest comedian this country ever produced. The only man that could just look at a camera and make people p1ss them themselves laughing

Paul Merton - how could they have him at #25??? I think the man's close to genius he's so quick witted.
As for Victoria Wood, I can honestly say I have never ONCE laughed at anything she's done, nothing, nada, nil, zip, rien, nought, owt, she is just NOT funny...and I know where I'd shove that bloody grand piano as well.

Any comedian poll which has Jo Brand in the top 25 proves that the majority of people who replied have no taste or knowledge of comedy.
Actually, any poll which suggests that Jo Brand is a comedian is seriously suspect. She's fat, she has periods. That's her act over.

Mart - It's a living British comedian poll. That rules out Dave Allen (rips the **** out of religion as you say, but he is Irish) and Robin Williams, who while still alive is not British.
Phil Cool is quite amusing, but (unless there's a lot of his work that I haven't seen) he doesn't have the performing and writing credentials that Ronnie Baker has. Billy Connolly also has wider talents than comedy (as John Brown in the film Mrs. Brown, for example).
I won't be too disappointed if either Ronnie or Billy gets the nomination. I can just about accept that Victoria Wood is clever and sometimes amusing, but she ain't top 5. Dawn French's appearance in this list shows either how crap this poll was or how badly I am out of touch with popular culture.
PS - Thanks STi-Frenchie . My girlfriend finds Jo Brand amusing. I suggested to her that JB only has two topics of conversation. We watched a Jo Brand programme, and Maria had to agree with me that JB's line of "humour" was very limited.... Once she's got beyond being a salad-dodger and having periods, the only things that are left are that she used to be a nurse and that she is a bit of a leftie (with all the non-humorous implications that being a feiminist leftie involve).
