Default any RAF chaps know about the Seaking wreck in cyprus??

Just curious, I have just come back from hols, while I was there I saw a wrecked seaking helicopter by the side of the road, looks like it's been there years. Just outside Papfos, near Ricco's beach, it had the RAF markings, it seemed starnged it was dumped there, it was odd, there was 2 bits but it didn't look like it had crashed ???? X1407 from memory.

I don't know the one you mean but it's probably an old Whirlwind or Wessex that had been retired from the RAF and sold off locally for scrap or suchlike. There's lots of bits of ex military equipment like this around cyprus.

Also, Cyprus is one big rubbish tip. Not so much around the touristy bits, but go further inland and there is rubbish strewn everywhere. As SimonH said, probably sold off for scrap and the local that bought it couldn't be bothered to break it up so just dumped it.

Cyprus is a fantastic place if you love finding old wrecks:

This old van was just outside Paphos airport:

And this old van was being used to fill a hole in a hedge:

...and this was our hire car

Millions of old beetles all over the place

Hope it hadn't been hit by depleted uranium! Lots of nice dust particles to inhale!

are you serious ?

how would I be able to find out if it was uranium shells that took it out ? we werent really supposed to be there so I don't think the army would appreciate a call asking that specific type of question.

uh oh

Maybe an artillery man could tell by the hole if you have a close up?.... depleted uranium isn't actually that radioactive, but it can be hazardous to your health (ionising alpha particles) if you inhale particles of it .... I wouldn't worry too much though, the tank is probably well-weathered and pretty clean.

They wouldn't use DU for training purposes, I wouldn't have thought. WRXTankie should be able to tell you...

bloody hell, can you believe what we talk about on scoobynet, from crashed seakings to cars to nips to depleted uranium shell damage and it's all in one thread - WOW it's better than a blokes magazine.

I can't find any close up's of the hole so I'm hoping that you are right about being well weathered. My mate is in the RAF in Iraq and they put all the tanks into huge desert fields and leave them well alone for the very same reason. Just last week he sent me this in an email:

I had a close one with a landmine the other day. I was taking a photo of
it and a bloody hare sprang up from right in front of me and ran full pelt
toward the mine (which was about 6 feet away)!! it ok though because some
of the cheap locally made cigarettes contain opiates, so i cained a couple
and calmed down a bit.
now how scary is that ?

It would probably be marked up if it had had DU used against it. Also any DU dust would be pretty quickly washed out by the rain etc in this climate.

The Iraqi stuff near Basra airport was marked up pretty quickly if it was DU contaminated - yellow paint and red tape...

I went to the main page and was instantly hypnotised by the model planes. Remote control armed planes EXCELLENT! Video number two is very funny.

Time they found something a bit safer than DU to use, vicious stuff for both sides of the conflict.

I dont remember that chopper near Paphos but it is a while since I was last there. As someone said, it is probably a scrapper which was sold off.
