We don't all use them. I have a real dislike of abbreviations, especially when used as a get-out clause; say something deeply offensive, but stick a LOL in the middle to show that really you were being ironic. No you weren't, you coward, you intended to be offensive, just didn't have the ***** to say it and mean it.
Same goes for smilies - can't stand the things.

Jasey, above, has very neatly demonstrated this, yet you will have interpreted that as a serious insult and will have taken it to heart which is a shame.
Poor old you!

Some have come about because we're basically lazy, more modern ones from texting and a lot of the original ones came from early email systems. You see a lot of these in the airline industry where most people used to use things such as SITA text - an email type system that charged by the character, so abbrivations were a way of sending cheap messages

Still - Keep this on Topic - I am curious as the logic behind online abbreviations. Sometimes we drop certain words from some abbreviations (The is dropped from FAO but not from BTTT), sometimes we split one word in two etc etc.

The use of smilies and trite abbreviations is at one level laziness, but at another an intentional obfucation - did he really mean I'm a ****** or was he just joking. LIGAS.

If you choose to ignore the icons and abbreviations then you will be missing the meaning of the text. You may also be interested to know that your words above come across as aloof and standoffish. Perhaps a cheeky little "" would have helped to round off your sharp edges.

I don't ignore the icons/abbreviations, and amazingly enough, I do understand what people are posting.*
My point is that these abbreviations and icons are massively overused. I take your point about comparing literature wiuth a bulleting board, but op-ed pieces in newspapers are, for the most part, conversational in style, yet manage - at least when well-written - to convey the fact that they're being serious/facetious/ironic (delete as appropriate) without resorting to oh-so-hilarious smilies, or bland abbreviations.
If my tone apprears aggressive, my apologies; clearly I'm not an especially good communicator. Regardless, you'll not see me using a "cheeky" smilie at any point in the near future, despite the fact that this clearly makes me a bleak, cold, heartless, aloof individual. With sharp edges.
* Clearly, this does not apply to Muppets!

Communication takes many forms. Newspapers are TELLING you what THEY want YOU to hear. Online forums are a conversational media and require people to say what they feel at the time. If I was having a real conversation and someone said "stop talking out of your ****" I would probably just shrug it off and maybe follow the advice.
If however they said " STOP TALKING OUT OF YOUR **** " I would probably hit them !
