Default Any GP's out there ?

Went to the Doctors yesterday, he said I had Tonsillitis.

He prescribed me a mouthwash, painkillers and anti biotics.

I am allergic to penicillin, so he gave me Erythromycin.( I dont recall ever having this brand before.)

Ive woke up this morning and my whole body is red, like Ive been in the sun.
Its blotchy and a bit itchy, also Ive lost some hearing in my ears, but I do have earache and headache to go with the sore throat, basically feel like ****.

My Doctors is shut at the weekend.

Shall I wait until Im a deaths door, or go to a walk in center effort ?

Should I stop taking the Erythromycin ?

Later Yoza. (The Sunbed queen.)

If you are allergic to Penicillin then WTF did the GP give you it Erythromycin (sp) by its very name tells you it has Penicillin in it

I'd not take any more Yoza until you get checked out.
I had a reaction to those tabs but mine side effects were tummy realted.

If you ring the surgery there should be a message with numbers that you can contact out of hours. Won't harm just to ring someone.
What bout NHS Direct? 0845 46 47

Hope you feel better soon

I'd stop taking it until you get medical advice.........sounds like you are having a reaction to it. Teh brand you have been given IIRC is an alternative for people allergic to penicillin as a friend of mine at school took it.......she also had a rash when she took it, although it wasn't bad, more like mild sunburn.

When the GP's have signed in, can I hi-jack this and ask what would be considered dangerously low blood pressure? My doc is considering putting me on treatment.....

He knows Im allergic to penicillin, this is supposed to be the next best thing, with NO penicillin in it.

Maybe he doesnt like me.

Ive just done a search on the drug, and skin rashes are a side effect, also deafness.

What, say again !..

Naah they give it to people who can't have penicillin, I wondered about the name too but......

Erythromycin

One of the Macrolides, it has an antibacterial spectrum similar to, but not identical to, that of penicillin. The drug is a valuable alternative for patients who are allergic to penicillin. Erythromycin is used for respiratory infections, including Whooping Cough, Chlamydia, Legionnaire’s Disease, Syphilis and enteritis caused by campylobacter. It is also used with neomycin as prophylaxis before bowel surgery. Though often active against penicillin-resistant staphylococci, these bacteria are now sometimes resistant to erythromycin. The drug may be given orally, intravenously or topically (for acne).

Hello

I am allergic to penicillin and a whole variety of "similiar" products. I did find one that was okay in the end, but you have to keep trying.

If you still have a rash everywhere (bottom of my feet and wrists were favourite with me) then taking a Zirtek tablet (from Chemist) will stop it.

Steve.

man i hate that ****... one of the worst illnesses ever.

i dont know why doctors in england are so **** at treating tonsillitis. the first thing they should have done is given u a strep throat test to see whether its even treatable by antibiotics (bet they didnt do this). there are 2 forms of tonsillitis - bacterial and viral. its ONLY worth giving antibiotics if its bacterial.

and wtf is up with them trying to give u pills. if it is bacterial this can be taken care of with a SINGLE intra-muscular injection (but yoza - let the doc do it - i know how u are with doing IM injections ). once injected, you're looking at a day or so to get over the worst of it. pills take 10 days.

if its viral, you're screwed. sadly with all the medical advances, viruses still cannot be cured. you'll just have to wait for it to pass which will take 1-2 weeks.

interestingly, whichever it is, you could use steroids to help u get over it. seriously.

actually, since u mention those other symptoms, if u havent had it before, it could be glandular fever (tonsillitis is one of things u can get when u have glandular fever.. as are headaches, earache, swollen glands).

tonsillitis a ****, your mates and workmates will class it as a sore throat but it really fells you, someone recommended ice cool dr pepper to sooth it i think it worked but it gave me a nasty dr pepper habit.

Listen...Erythromycin is the alternative to those who are ALLERGIC to Penicillin. I know because I prescribe both. Regards the other issues what painkillers did he give you? Anyway...best to get in touch with Emergency sevice (GP one). Phone the practice back and on the answering machine there should be an alternative number. I hope that helps.

High dose Erythromycin can cause the Sh*ts. If it is 500mg Erythromycin try to reduce it to 250mg Erythromycin 4 times a day rather than 500mg 4 times a day. Get yourself checked out anyway asap.

Steroid will suppress your immune response and could make your symptoms worse as your bodies defences may be suppressed.

Thanks.

I was only joking about the steroid site injection.

The pain killers prescribed were Paracetamol, but they are no good, so Im on Nurofen Plus.

I am keeping to the correct dosage, and if my deafness and lobster skin hasnt cleared up tomorrow Im going back to see my GP on Monday morning.

that simply isnt true.

take a look at:

http://health.discovery.com/encyclopedias/2351.html
"Oral steroids may be given for a short period of time if symptoms are severe. Oral steroids can lessen the symptoms of tonsiliitis caused by mononucleosis. Antibiotics can be helpful in preventing infection if material has collected on the surface of the tonsils."

or:
http://www.mindspring.com/~drwarren/sorethrt.htm
"If a patient has such severe tonsillitis that he can't swallow, steroids can be used to reduce the inflammation of the tonsils."

or:
http://www.emedicine.com/ent/topic314.htm

etc etc etc

First of all erythromycin is not a penicillin.

It has prokinetic effects i.e empties your stomach quicker and gives you diarrhoea! nice.

And of course steroids can be given for various conditions with an inflammatory component as mentioned earlier.

Im still alive.....

My forefinger and thumb are killing though.

This may be down to re-setting 26 watches though.....

Nearly there 11 to go.

Then 3 phones, 3 car clocks, 1 cooker, 1 central heating timer, 2 videos, 2 cameras, 4 clocks, etc etc......

The only watch to change its own time was a G-shock.....
