You can only really get it in Cornwall, but Walter Hicks Navel rum.... its a killer! Its a really thick oily, rough tasting, dark rum @71.4%. I have known people to puke after just one shot. My 17 stone cousin went from being tipsy, after a few beers, to literally legless after downing a pint of bass with 3 shots of hicks in!

Polish vodka from Vodka Revolution.
I downed three on the bounce I can hardly remember the rest of the night :O
Only thing that's ever had me so wrecked is a dirty pint - everything off the top row mixed with either lager or cider along with a double Baileys. It's then a race to drink it before the Baileys congeals
£15 a pop

When i was in Cyprus i got a few bottles of Vodka...........60%. Tastes lovely, but is total loopy juice, a few glasses and your well set up for the night.
The only country closest to UK that sells it is Germany. I had a box of 10 bottles imported a few months back, total cost worked out to be about £120, that included shipping and tax. Havent been on the website since, so dont know what prices are like now.

mmmmm absinth. Tastes like cough medicine. European strengths generally around 60% Never seen it in a pub though. And not so easy to get hold of though there is a shop in Soho....
Original Absinth is banned because it is quite literally poisonous. I thought the "magic" ingredient was some sort of wood extract but it may well be something else.
Strongest spirit that you can make by distillation is 79.9% - dont ask for an explanaiton unless you know what the word "eutectic" means.
And it just so happens that you used to be able to buy some filthy stuff called "Polish pure spirit" in Morrisons of all places that was 79.9%. Don't take this as a recommendation mind, it tastes **** even if you drink it straight from the deep freeze

My son came in from a night at the bar recently, said he and his friends (all 16) tried absinthe as they'd all heard about it. Can anyone explain to me the difference btwn the "UK" version and the "European" version (let alone the "original/proper" version)?
(Awaits crap jokes about wrong side of road, surrender monkeys, unelected Eurocrats, etc...)

European: stronger, though what proof level, I would only be guessing, but look at European beers: 6% in France, 5% over here!
Original: VERY strong stuff, contained wormwood extract, which is definitely hallucinogenic. The French commanders gave it to their troops to encourage them to go "over the top" during WW1, but it was later banned due to dependency and high rates of alcoholism in returning troops..............those that DID return, anyway

To go back to the original question, the following are all pretty potent:
Slivovic
Grappa, and
Marc
although the last two taste like drain cleaner, neat, and are the same drink, made in Italy and France respectively.
ANY drink is only as potent as you are used to though: I can put away a whole bottle of red wine at a sitting, or 6 LARGE pernod and lemonades, and feel little effect, but give me about 3 pints of strong cider, and I'm anyone's (females anyway )

I stand corrected.
Surprising numbers of folk think degrees proof and % spirit are the same thing though, I've lost count of the number of times I've been told that this, that, or the other drink was 100% alcohol, when it was actally 100 degree proof.

BTW: as a young man I once drank some pure ethanol, the 98% stuff, mixed with orange juice, and had a hangover for 3 days!!! Luckily we did mix it about 50-50, but it tasted like rubbing alcohol smells

Grappa is great, tastes really good neat, but its an acquired taste It goes straight to your head. Believe me you know about it when you've had 3 or 4 shots. Decent grappa is served straight from the freezer. It's excellent if you have a cold or cough as it clears the snot almost instantaneously.
You can get Absinthe shots in your local Witherspoons - last time I got leathered there was on Absinthe and Red Bull. Apparantly Van Gogh hacked off his ear while mashed on Absinthe, so remember to stay away from sharp things if you're on a green fairy binge !

if we can move onto shooters rather than just shorts..
The Circle Bar in Stockwell make a drink called 'the Circle Bar Satan' which is a B-52 with a dollop of Absinth on top. Both tasty and very dangerous.
