I think its quite amusing that people get sent off on "remedial training" by their companies on the basis of a single email! you send the boss a badly punctuated email and next thing you know you have a cushy week off doing a writing course! Only in America!

I think bad spelling and poor punctuation is fine.

What does it matter if we are unable to communicate our thoughts and misunderstand each other completely.

If an e-mail is important, but I know that people may ignore it because of the boring nature, I tend to leave the subject line blank (or actually type in '(no subject)' depending on which e-mail client I'm using ).
