Will James May be in the next series of Top Gear
Following Mr May's comments about the French yesterday Who thinks the PC police will get him kicked off the show for the next series?!
Let's not turn this into a debate about the French or the validity of his comments etc... I'm interested in views about how much the BBC will tolerate from its presenters.
Best.

I hope so, I think three of them work well together. If he gets binned for what was clearly a tounge in cheek jibe then it honks IMO.

I like Jame May too and personally found his little outburst funny. I sincerely hope he stays as there is a good dynamic between the three presenters.

I found his comments to be very offensive and am, as we speak, organising a massive protest with my french bretheren against this unprovoked attack.
Unfortunately most of them are either too busy having sex with someone else's wife or thinking up new and improved ways in which to collaborate with the germans while steadfastly refusing to kowtow to modern ideas on personal hygiene.

I think that it will ensure that he is definitely in the next series, with a bit of luck. I think he is good too.
Top Gear has certainly improved rcently and is far more enjoyable to watch.

Something about France being a country full of lamb burning garlic eating people and its just a country one has to pass through to get to Italy !

Hmm, doesnt bother me what he says about the French but I see how it could upset some, the only thing that concerned me was that as said ealier in the thread, they have a good thing going and it would be a shame to spoil it for the sake of an ill judged tirade at the French, I have always enjoyed holidaying in France and am going in January despite what Mr May says, so there.
I wonder what would have happened if he had aimed a similar kind of opinion at Moslems, Blacks or another ethnic minority, as basically what he was saying was at the expense of another race, therefore it was racism, however racism it seems is acceptable if directed at white people, i.e some targets are still onsidered fair game but I dont think we can have one rule for one group and one for another.
However, every part of his statement did have some truth in it, the French did burn British Lambs, the do eat Garlic and it is neccessary to pass through France to get to Italy, so I dont know whaether the BBC will let that one slide, i think it was the sentiment rather than the content that was the problem.
To be honest the whole Race and Racism thing confuses me, I would lose my job if I said one derogatory thing about an Asian person, I think I am still allowed to slag Scousers off though.

Seriously, though, I think you have a very valid point - it seems to be considered much more of a crime if a person insults/attacks someone of a different race than if the insult/attack someone of their own race. Surely that attitude in itself discriminates between two circumstances based on the race of those involved, so is inherently racist? IMHO, I subscribe to the only truly non-racist view: that the seriousness of a crime is the same no matter what race the perpetrator and victim.
Similarly, the (slightly dated) term "positive discrimination" relating to giving preference to Asians / afro-carribean etc. How can discrimination in any direction be considered positive?
Anyway, to the original point, I actually quite like parts of France, but have to confess I laughed at James May. But then again, I laugh at some of Clarkson's Norfolk jokes, despite that being my "ancestral homeland".

James May is excellent. Dont forget, Clarkson also pointed out that the French are a lot better than us in that episode, so it was 1-1 French V UK last night
I'll be gutted when TG finishes, it really makes Sunday nights more enjoyable.

I didnt say that, France is as diverse as Britain but French People are predominantly white Caucasians as are the British.
Does it really matter whether discrimination is based on race, skin colour, Nationality, sexuality, disability, region, gender etc etc, surely discrimination is just that, excluding or treating somebody differently somebody based on a characteristic.
So imi, whats your point, why do I need to wake up, are Moslems a race, why is it acceptable to slag off France on TV but if May had made similar comments about Pakistan he would have been sacked on the spot, I am not saying either are acceptable but why the double standards ?
Besides its rude to shout.
