Can you be asked for your height and weight on a job application form? My daughter is applying for a office job. Seem's a bit strange. Feedback from you HR type's please.

Weight and height means they can calculate Body Mass Index. They may then have their own idea of what is acceptable within the usually quoted ok range of 19 to 25.

Discriminating on weight is as bad as discriminating on skin colour FFS. I woukld never DARE to ask anyone their weight/height on a form - totally out of order IMHO. This is particularly unecessary if you are going to interview them and will find out of they are going to be a lerthargic pie chomping sweater in the back of the office!!!

It's a tricky one without more details of the job and the benefits package.

What was the outcome of that lawsuit where a health club / gym chain (possibly Fitness First?) didn't want any fat people as customer-facing staff because it goes against their corporate image of promoting health and exercise

But surely this is only relevant if they were offering her the job. At this early stage it shouldn't matter. I'd call their HR department and ask why these questions are on the application.

They are certainly making up for that at my local Fitness First! There's one heffer there that doesn't look like she'd seen the inside of a gym before she started working there!!!

Coppers and Air Stewards/esses used to have a minimum height requirement.... Not sure if this is still the case though. Guess you can be somewhat flexible over weight question if that was a problem area but height is trickier

If there is a genuine reason (eg health & safety) where a minimum height is required then it might be defensible. As posted earlier, ask the company's HR dept why the questions are being asked - there may be a case of indirect race or sex discrimination. Look up Race Relations Act 1976 and Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (legislation may have been amended since but I think the spirit is still intact).

Ask CAB or ACAS if further guidance needed.
