Talking I am going to Rick Stein's restaurant

Just booked to go and stay in Cornwall ( Padstow ).

So why I am down there I am going to eat at St Petroc's
( the bistro that cooks the dishes on his T.V show )
and Stein's cafe....!

I cant wait, been a fan of his for some time, only problem is its not until December.....!!

Has anyone eaten at any of his places ?

Have eaten at all of them over the years. The restaurant is very good with proper size portions, no nouvelle cuisine toss for Rick! The bistro's easier to get into but the food is still very good

Problem is he has been " a food hero " of mine, just hope it doesnt dissapoint !!
Most people i have asked for info have said the bistro and cafe has just as nice food as the seafood restaurant just not as stylish, in other words cheaper which suits me ;-)

Would love to go to the The Seafood Restaurant, Riverside but my g/f hates seafood so it would be table for one!

That was one of the other reasons, i am not the biggest seafood fan , just love his style, the other restaurants have a lot simpler dishes for the seafood novice also with 5 mouths to feed it could get rather expensive....!

Just tell you G/F your of to the Steak restaurant in Padstow then before she has a chance to tell her moules mariniere from a sirloin you will be sat in the seafood restaurant......:-)

I went to this restaurant about a year ago, didn't book, just walked in and asked if there were any tables free. The lady on the desk said no (get lost basically) but the head waiter overhead as he passed and got us a table for an hour later. Suffice to say the food and wine were good. Would look forward to another visit.

Padstow and the surrounding coast is my favorite place in the UK.
I've also been to Ricks sea front place a few times and even spoke to him about Padstow.

Enjoy your break and, if your brave enough at this time of year, hit the waves at Fistral.

Cheers

A little tip. Pop a little north to Port Isaac and have the local haddock in beer batter with home made tartar sauce at The Slipway. Last time we ordered it we had to wait for the fisherman to walk over from the hut opposite where they gut, clean and fillet the mornings catch. You can't really get much fresher than that. Nicest piece of fish I've ever eaten (& I do like fish) and only 7.95. Same meal in Steins is 18.95 and he doesn't serve Guinness Would still love to try his stuff, but the G/F won't sanction 70+ for one meal, tightwad

December should be about right .. anytime from Easter onwards and there is this invasion of old biddy's that happens at about 10:00 every morning. It's like a beige tide

Food is good in both. We stayed at the seafood restaurant last time , and ate there one night, St Petrocs the next.

Been to all of his places in Padstow for the past couple of years... all good stuff!

The Bistro isn't all seafood so it's a a good place to sample some top nosh if your not into the little fishes!

Last year we tried the rather expensive Fish & Chips from his shop on the harbour... about £17 for 2 portions but **** me it was the BEST take away grub we've ever had

Rick Stein - Definitely a food hero of mine

BTW, if your in the padstow for a few days I can HIGHLY recommend a restaurant called The Ebb.... was a shot in the dark for somewhere to eat but to be fair it was actually NICER than the food we had last time in the Seafood Restaurant

If you want to work up an apetite first, hire some bikes and cycle the Camel Trail. If you "go all the way" you'll pass through Wadebridge, Bodmin and end up at a little farmhouse for tea & carrot cake In all about 36 miles and you'll need to visit Stein's Buttock Shop after

Lovely pub that, right on the river. Thought £10 for bangers and mash was a little steep though and that was about 7 years ago.

Were there over 5 days, i plan to hit the beach at least once if its not to cold. Other than that just eat, drink and sleep ;-)

Would be cool to bump into Rick himself, not sure how much time he spends down there now with all the filming he does....

Padstow brings back memories..
I think every man and his dog has been there at some time or another.
We've (the family) been camping at Trevose head (Mother Ivey's) for about 20 years off and on.
well I should say "have been" as I've not been back since it started to get really comercialised about 8-10 years ago. I knew it before Ricky was there, before they installed the harbour loch, and was there even when the mad lady used to sing at her balcony overlooking the harbour.
Always used to stop off at St Merryn on the way back to campsite for a Cream Tea.
Good surfing at Harlyn and constantine (smacked at surfboard into my face at Constantine and gave up the idea of surfing after that. )

ahhhh the childhood memories.

Though Mr Stein was(is) a hero for me and my wife we went last year, stayed, ate gutted.... My wife's bouillabise (sp) was magnificent, my seafood medley was terrible. Sucha disappointment I love fish from raw to cooked but it was shocking. Service magnificent, wine delicious, fish poor. Worst bit was the baby leaf spinach, a personal favourite, so salty we could not eat it! Room was so hot we could n't sleep. Above the kitchen. He wasn't there of course so cannot say much else.
Course we did the right thing and payed and shut up and left.... we still enjoy watching his food. Though when we looked at his trip across the canal du midi we saw how much salt he uses....
Good luck.

Honestly can't remember - it was about 100yards from the seafood restaurant back towards town . My hazy memory recalls it had a wooden facia . Inside was comfy sofas and an open fire

The London Inn is off up one of the back streets toward the cinema.

Then there is the Golden Lion, think that's the one on the harbour front (by the car park)
