Apart from spam and stupid banter I have just about every single email I have sent or received at work and at home since 2000! It's very useful, to be able to search through previous correspondance. Storage is cheap, so why not?

Well bearing in mind that most email is unencrypted and can be read by anyone who chooses to intercept it - that's not a major issue. Also bear in mind that almost all email is scanned in some way now for anti virus and anti spam purposes. The ads are pretty small to be honest and if you use a decent email client like Thunderbird from Mozilla, you don't have to see the ads at all.
People are prepared to give away vast amounts of private data on a daily basis. (much more so than anything that Gmail will collect or see). All the BS about Gmail and privacy is vastly over-hyped. If you choose to use unencrypted email to send confidential data then more fool you. If you just use email to have a chat with your mates, then I don't really believe Gmail offers anymore of a threat to your privacy than any other email account.
