Default Trouble sleeping?

I had this problem at the beginning of last year which lasted up until around September where I would wake up each night at 04:30 and have trouble getting back to sleep. At the time I put it down to withdrawal symptoms from smoking.

Over Christmas I had a bit of cigar thing going which I've now canned and the dreaded sleeples nights are back with a vengeance - this time I wake at around 03:30 and struggle to get back to sleep. My wife bought me some herbal tablets which recommended a dosage of two tablets which I took last night, to no avail which was no surprise as I've had sleeping tablets in the past which didn't work. Tonight, I'm going to double the dosage to see if this helps but if not, does anyone have any good tips to help me resolve this problem?

Last year, I was drinking more than I should - about a bottle of wine each night which I've continued into this year but next week I'm planning to reduce my intake to two or three bottles per week. The problem is, that as soon as I reduce the alcohol intake I struggle to even get to sleep so ideally I need to get the sleeping sorted out first.

Help?

flatcap, whats you usual bed/rise time? Some people get up late or tend to slow down in the evening to a state where they might as well be asleep, thus being partially rested, they dont need a full nights sleep and wake up at odd times.

There's also the chance that you're carrying too much water, and you body wakes you up at around the same time to go to the toilet. Try driking less in the evenings?

Any back pains or perhaps new bed etc last year?

try eating la bit of lettuce before sleeping. Honest.

If all comes to the worse try this. Tell the missus that she looks like your grannys bottom without her makeup and before you know you'll be knocked out in no time.
ps. probably several days so to speak, thus more than enough!

It's deffo the booze m8, been there done it. The 4/4.30 wake up is the clue, exac prob I had. Do you keep a glass of water by your bed btw? This will be a very hard pattern to break, once it's started your body clock gets used to it, dont ask me why. It took me nearly a year to get out of it. A bottle of wine is a bit much every night as you probably know. If you must drink make sure you finish before 8 pm at the latest. GL.

I get the sleepless nights when I booze in any quantity, basically just take in less stimulants, get some exercise and no computer games before bed.

Oh and acheiving sexual relief works wonders !

Failing that, Night Nurse !

Might be worth getting some mild sleeping pills from the doctor-just to get you in the habit of a full night's sleep.

Even a cup of Horlicks might help, if you can stand it.

No offence, but you dont need sleeping tablets or herbal guff m8, you know why you are having problems, just admit it and stop hitting the ol vino so hard. I doubt any good doctor would give you sleeping tablets, especially not if you told the truth about your taste for a bottle of wine every night.

This is going to take you months to sort out. I just dont understand why people are giving you such stupid advice. Stop hitting the bottle so hard or live with problematic sleeping patterns.

There are thousands of good sites like the ones below, take your pick, they all say the same thing anyhow. As I said, good luck, you'll need it

At the risk of being accused of being in denial, I'm aware that drinking a bottle of wine in one session is excessive but regardless of whether I have drunk alcohol or not I still cannot sleep properly. Like BMI, there is no automatic cut off point at which you become an alcoholic and if you take the average Mediterranean's consumption of wine then most of them are way up there on the lush scale.

Yes I know, but if you read any of those link you will see that your sleep pattern can be disturbed for up to 6 months or more 'after' you stop drinking. I like a bottle of wine and have had one per night or more in the past. I was in denial, I'm not any more.

You might just be too hot in bed and don't realise it - try sleeping with less layers on the bed.

I agree with what you're saying but my sleep problems are a result of nicotine withdrawal, not alcohol.

Well if it's that simple just wear a nicotine patch before bedtime. Cured. It's your call. I doubt many would agree that nicotine withdrawal causes you to wake up each night at 4.30. That sounds more like alcohol induced sleep disruption, dehydration or needing to ****. Did you read any of those articles?

Are you sure there's nothing else wrong as sleep interuption like this is sometimes caused by depression/anxiety...

Jye, if you re-read my first post you'll see that the problem first started at the beginning of last year when I stopped smoking. Progressively, over the year it improved until like a muppet, I started on the cigars during November and December which has caused the current sleeping problems as my body adjusts to not having nicotine.

The links were useful but I'm not an alcholic and although I recognise that I should reduce my intake I'm not going to cut alcohol out completely as I do enjoy it and I'm not prepared to go down the "my body is my temple" route when I believe that things such as alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation.

I'm not going to put a nicotine patch on now when I've mostly expunged it from my system and the original point of my thread was to find out methods to help me sleep. I've always been a light sleeper and some of the comments have been useful which I'll try prior to cutting down next week.

Nope. Couldn't be happier. It's almost as if something goes off at a certain time and the noise wakes me but I'm fairly certain it's not that.
