LOTR Return of the King - extended version worthwhile?
Im about to buy the LOTR Return of the King, but cant decide whether to spend almost twice as much getting the extended version?
Im not interested in the 'extra's', but I know a fair few scenes were cut out of this version to keep it under 3hrs.
Anyone seen the extended? Is it worth the extra money?

I would recommend visiting this site as the LOTR Extended Editions have been discussed on numerous occasions.

I have it, and I thought it was worth the extra money (it's not that much more depending on where you get it from actually).
The second and third films benefitted from the extended scenes IMO, but the first one was ok in the theatrical release, although I did enjoy the extended version.

Yep - good although where they have the split to put the 2nd disc is is cr@p - when the 2nd disc starts, you get the background theme still playing from the first disc.
Very worthwhile - although the extended bits to "The Paths Of The Dead" look like they belong in a Tomb Raider Game...

TBH I thought all the extended editions were much better than the theatrical releases, enjoyed them all a great deal
Can't say getting off my *** to swap a disc half way through bothers me, FFS you'd most likely have to get up for a p!ss at some point anyway in the 4 hours!

I've never been bothered about swapping discs either, but then I do sit only 2 feet away from a 32" Widescreen and have the DVD player next to my feet!

If you sit only 2 feet away from a 32" widescreen TV you can't actually see half of the television clearly...

Well I think I'll go for the extended - its 50 minutes longer, and I remember in the cinema thinking that towards the end it looked as if they'd cut down quite a few scenes so as to fit them all in, so has to be worth swapping DVD's for that
Really are fantastic films too, watched the first 2 recently again and I'd forgotten just how good they are - films dont come much better.

The extended editions of all 3 are WELL worth the minimal investment. FOTR was much improved, TTT greatly so. The extra footage in ROTK seemed a bit like fillers the 1st time I watched them, but on subsequent viewings I can see the need for the scenes. I particularly liked the Mouth of Sauron, but still find the editing of the Houses of Healing and Merry's search for Pippin confuses the timescale briefly. I get infuriated to the point of turning off if I start to watch the theatricals if I happen upon them whilst channel hopping.
I'm guessing you need Region 2, so look HERE
And for future reference, to find the cheapest supplier, go HERE
PS. They're worth it for the DTS soundtrack alone, providing you have a suitable AV amp

I am a big LOTR fan, but was very disappointed with the extended edition of ROTK. (Amongst others) Fabricated scenes such as Gandalf lying on the ground beneath the Lord of the Nazgul (who breaks his staff FFS), Aragorn's totally out of character decapitation of the Mouth of Sauron, and the pointless extra footage of the city of the dead collapsing and releasing about a million human skulls just killed the film for me. Watched it once, unlikely I'll watch it again.
